Chapter 9 - The Poisoned Ledger

"You're lying," I breathed, my hands trembling slightly despite my desperate attempt to keep control. "The autopsy report was clear. Natural causes. Acute myocardial infarction."
"Autopsies can be tailored when you own the county coroner and half the pharmaceutical supply chain in Washington," Victor replied smoothly, unperturbed by my anger. He reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a thick, yellowed envelope sealed with red wax, and tossed it casually onto the desk between us.
"Read it," Victor said. "That’s the original toxicology report that Howard and Eleanor paid three hundred thousand dollars to bury the morning after Terrence passed away. It details the exact synthetic cardiac inhibitor used to stop his heart while he was recovering in the private VIP wing of the hospital."
Julian stepped forward, picked up the envelope, and tore it open with hurried precision. He pulled out the folded medical documents, his eyes scanning the dense technical jargon. As he read further down the page, all the color completely drained from his face.
"My God..." Julian muttered, looking up at me in horror. "Audrey... this is authentic. It’s signed by Dr. Harrison—Howard's personal physician."
My vision blurred. For six months, I had blamed myself for not being there enough, for working late, for trusting my in-laws' grief. I had channeled every ounce of my sorrow into a cold, calculated revenge campaign against people who threw my suitcase in the mud, believing money and power were the ultimate battlegrounds.
I had been fighting the wrong war entirely.
