Chapter 1 - The Weight of Absence

The private suite at St. Jude Memorial Hospital smelled of antiseptic and lingering, hollow grief. I sat propped up against crisp white pillows, my fingers lightly tracing the sterile blue veins of my left hand where the IV line had just been removed. My mother stood by the window, her silhouette rigid against the pale Chicago dawn, silently weeping into a linen handkerchief. Beside the door, Maya clutched my leather laptop case against her chest as though it were a shield protecting her from the raw fury simmering just beneath my quiet demeanor.
“He’s at O'Hare,” Maya whispered, her voice cracking slightly as she checked her phone. Her eyes flicked toward me, wide with nervous anticipation. “His private flight from San Francisco touched down ten minutes ago. He’s headed straight for the penthouse.”
“Let him go there,” I replied, my tone flat, devoid of the warmth that Julian Vale had taken advantage of for five long years. “He’ll find a dead plant, an empty closet, and a stack of legal documents waiting on the kitchen island.”
“Evelyn, are you entirely certain about this?” my mother asked, turning away from the window, her face lined with a lifetime of sorrow and protective anger. “Once you trigger the corporate recall and file for divorce, there is no turning back. Julian has powerful allies on the board. David Sterling and the executive committee won't let him fall without a brutal fight.”
I looked past my mother, out toward the gray expanse of Lake Michigan. My body still throbbed with the phantom, searing pain of a shattered womb, and every breath felt like inhaling crushed glass. But beneath the agony, a cold, unyielding iron had settled into my bones. Julian had left me to bleed out alone in a quiet house while he played house in Napa Valley with Chloe Marr. He had traded our son’s life for a weekend of self-indulgence and corporate PR spin.

“Let them fight,” I said, lifting the silver-plated fountain pen from the bedside tray. “My father built Vale Meridian from the ground up to secure my future, not to finance Julian’s ego or his mistresses. Call Arthur Vance. Tell him the board meeting is locked in for ten o'clock sharp. We’re taking back the crown.”
