Chapter 8 - Descent into the Shadows

The service stairwell of the Meridian Residences was a narrow, concrete-walled vertical chute that smelled of damp masonry and emergency generator exhaust. The harsh fluorescent lights hummed with an irritating, high-pitched whine as we descended flight after flight of stairs, our footsteps echoing sharply against the concrete steps.

Julian was lagging behind, gasping for breath, clutching his side as if the shock of the past six days had finally caught up to his heart.

“Keep moving, Julian,” I ordered over my shoulder, keeping my hand gripped firmly around the small tactical flashlight and my phone. My body still ached from the trauma of the hospital and the blood loss, but adrenaline had replaced pain with a cold, focused clarity.

“I can’t... I can’t breathe,” Julian wheezed, stopping on the landing between the thirty-eighth and thirty-seventh floors. He leaned against the metal handrail, sweat pouring down his temples. “Evelyn, just... go. If David’s men are in the building, they’re hunting me, not you. You’re still the majority shareholder of Vale Meridian. They won't touch you.”

“You think David Sterling draws a distinction between a CEO he owns and the majority owner who just fired him?” I spun around, stepping up to Julian and grabbing the lapel of his ruined shirt, forcing him to look me in the eye. “You sold out my father's company, Julian. You traded our son's future for corporate kickbacks and a penthouse view. You don't get to bow out now. You walk down these stairs, or I leave you here for them.”

Maya, who had been scanning the stairwell entrance door a few steps ahead, suddenly held up a hand, freezing us in place.

“Wait,” Maya whispered, her eyes wide as she pointed toward the heavy steel fire door leading to the thirty-sixth floor hallway.

From the other side of the door came the distinct, rhythmic clack-clack of tactical combat boots descending the stairs from above us. They weren't just taking the private elevator; they were sweeping the emergency stairwells floor by floor.
