Chapter 5 - The Morning After

The morning sun washed over the outdoor patio of Lumina, casting a warm, golden glow across the empty tables and the pristine white linen tablecloths.
Camilla sat at a corner table, sipping a cup of freshly brewed black coffee while reviewing the updated morning delivery manifest on her tablet. The restaurant was officially closed for the weekend—a rare, unprecedented shutdown that had sent shockwaves through the local culinary community.
Across the street, parked illegally right in the red zone, sat Beatrice’s luxury SUV.
Camilla watched calmly as the passenger door flew open and Beatrice emerged, marching across the pavement with her face contorted into a mask of absolute, incandescent rage. She didn't bother using the side entrance; she pushed open the heavy front glass doors of Lumina with enough force to rattle the hinges.
"Camilla!" Beatrice shrieked, her voice echoing through the empty dining room like a siren.
Gavin stepped out from the kitchen, wiping his hands on a clean towel, looking ready to intercept her, but Camilla raised a single finger, signaling him to stand down.
"Leave us, Gavin," Camilla said softly.
Gavin nodded, retreating back behind the double doors.
Beatrice stormed across the dining room, her heels clicking furiously against the hardwood floor until she reached Camilla’s table. She slammed her designer handbag down onto the wood so hard that Camilla’s coffee cup rattled in its saucer.
"Have you completely lost your mind?!" Beatrice screamed, her face flushed red beneath her heavy powder. "Lucas called me at five o'clock this morning in tears because his bank cards were declined at a gas station! The police are harassing him! And our family accounts—frozen! Do you have any idea what kind of humiliation you've brought upon our name?!"
Camilla didn't flinch. She took a slow, deliberate sip of her coffee, set the cup down, and looked up with eyes as cold as winter stone.
"Your name, Beatrice?" Camilla asked, her voice dangerously calm. "The only reason anyone in this city knows your name is because you spent the last seven years attaching it like a parasite to mine."
Beatrice gasped, clutching her chest as if she had been physically struck. "Parasite?! You ungrateful little peasant! My son made you! Without Lucas, you'd still be scrubbing grease off the floors of some dive bar!"
"Let's test that theory, Beatrice," Camilla said smoothly.
She reached into her leather portfolio, pulled out a thick, legal-bound document stamped with the official seal of the San Diego Superior Court, and slid it across the table.
Beatrice looked down at the paper, her eyes narrowing suspiciously. "What is this nonsense?"
"That is a formal notice of eviction for the La Jolla villa," Camilla answered, leaning back in her chair. "And a secondary civil lien demanding full restitution of the two hundred and sixty thousand dollars in embezzled funds that Lucas and your bridge club friends have systematically drained from Lumina’s operating reserves since 2023."
Beatrice scoffed, though a slight tremor in her lower lip betrayed her growing panic. "You can't do that! Lucas owns half of everything!"
"Lucas owns zero," Camilla corrected sharply. "And as of this morning, Marcus Vance has expanded the forensic audit to include every single 'charitable donation' and 'family loan' funneled through your personal accounts—including the luxury SUV parked illegally across the street."
Beatrice went completely rigid.
Before she could form a reply, the front doors of the restaurant chimed again.
Two men in dark suits walked inside, holding official clipboards and a set of heavy brass locks.

Beatrice spun around, her eyes widening in sheer horror as she recognized the logo on their jackets.
It was the repossession and asset-seizure team for the La Jolla property.
