Chapter 8 - The Inheritance Trap

The grand oak doors of the downtown probate court slammed shut with a heavy, echoing thud as Beatrice Linwood marched down the marble steps, her face twisted into a mask of pure desperation. Arthur Vance trotted along beside her, holding a thick leather portfolio under his arm, looking like a man trying to outrun an avalanche.

"You told me Judge Sterling would throw out the criminal referral, Arthur!" Beatrice hissed, jabbing a gloved finger toward the attorney’s chest as they reached the sidewalk. "Instead, my son is sitting in a federal holding cell, my accounts are locked, and Camilla’s lawyers have subpoenaed every trust fund document bearing my signature since 1995!"

"Beatrice, keep your voice down," Arthur muttered, glancing nervously around the plaza. "We underestimated the depth of the forensic audit. Marcus Vance didn't just look at Lumina’s books; he traced the seed capital for your entire real estate portfolio back to funds embezzled from your late husband’s original estate settlement thirty years ago."

Beatrice stopped dead in her tracks. The color drained completely from her face, leaving her skin looking like old parchment beneath her heavy makeup.

"What... what did you say?" she whispered, her voice dropping into a shaky tremor.

"You heard me," Arthur said grimly, opening his portfolio and pulling out a yellowed legal document stamped with a state archive seal. "The villa in La Jolla, the trust fund, the stocks—none of it legally belongs to you. Your husband’s original will stipulated that any concealed assets discovered after his passing revert directly to the primary bloodline beneficiary. Which, under the amended corporate charter Camilla’s legal team just filed... is Camilla."

Beatrice stared at the paper as if it were venomous. "That's impossible. My husband trusted me! He gave me everything!"

"He trusted a woman who managed his accounts," a calm, familiar voice rang out from the top of the courthouse steps.

Beatrice whipped around.

Camilla stood at the top of the marble staircase, wearing a sharp, tailored navy suit, her hair pulled back into a sleek bun. She didn't look like a overworked kitchen chef anymore. She looked like a CEO surveying her newly acquired empire.

"You..." Beatrice choked out, taking a stumbling step backward. "You staged all of this. You planned every single piece of it."

"I spent seven years watching you treat my life like a charity case, Beatrice," Camilla said, walking slowly down the steps toward them, her heels clicking rhythmically against the stone. "I spent sixteen hours a day building a restaurant while you and your son treated it like a personal ATM. But you made one fatal mistake."

"And what is that, you ungrateful little thief?" Beatrice spat, her venom flaring up through her panic.

"You underestimated the person who actually did the work," Camilla replied, stopping two feet away from her mother-in-law. She reached into her briefcase and pulled out a single, pristine document, holding it out toward Arthur Vance. "That is a notice of default on the La Jolla estate. By three o'clock this afternoon, the locks will be changed. And by tomorrow morning, Beatrice, you'll be packing your designer bags out of a house you never actually owned."
