Chapter 7 - The Corporate Severance

The word suspended hung in the sterile air like a guillotine blade waiting to drop.

Caleb turned slowly from Arthur Vance, his face drained of all color, staring at his boss as if he were looking at a stranger. "Marcus... you know how this game is played. My mother engineered a public smear campaign to force my hand. You’ve known me for six years—you know I earned every single billable hour, every client account, every tier of that partnership!"

"Business doesn't run on merit, Caleb. It runs on risk management," Marcus replied, his tone entirely devoid of emotion, like a machine evaluating a ledger entry. He glanced briefly at me and the baby before looking back at Caleb. "When a senior partner's family explodes into a public tabloid circus involving criminal charges, child neglect allegations, and viral social media posts, the board doesn't wait for a courtroom drama to resolve. We cut the liability. Your desk will be cleared out by morning."

Arthur Vance offered a tight, sympathetic smile that didn't reach his eyes. "You see, Caleb? You're fighting a war on two fronts. You can't beat your mother in family court, and you can't survive corporate exile without an income. The only rational move is to sign the voluntary relinquishment waiver, let Beatrice take temporary custody to calm the public storm, and sort out your divorce amicably."

"Amicably?" I choked out, my voice trembling with a mixture of grief and pure, unadulterated fury. I shifted my baby safely against my chest with one arm, using my free hand to push myself up against the pillows despite the tearing pain in my abdomen. "Your client covered my newborn son in industrial shoe polish, assaulted me while I was recovering from major surgery, and broadcasted a defamatory lie to destroy my husband’s career. You call that amicable?"

Arthur turned to me, his smile dropping into a mask of professional coldness. "Mrs. Linwood, emotion has no standing in civil litigation. Without capital, without a lawyer who can afford to match retainer fees against the Linwood Trust, you have no legal footing."

"She’s not alone," a sharp, calm voice echoed from the doorway.

Everyone froze.

Standing in the entrance behind Marcus Vance was a woman in a tailored navy suit, her hair pulled back into a sleek bun, holding a thick leather briefcase. She looked around the hospital room with the cool, calculating air of a seasoned predator entering an established hunting ground.

"And who might you be?" Arthur asked, narrowing his eyes.

"I am Camilla Linwood," she said smoothly, stepping past Marcus without a second glance. "And as the primary stakeholder of Lumina Enterprises and the court-appointed forensic auditor currently dismantling the Linwood family trust, I represent the only person in this room who can legally freeze Arthur Vance’s personal asset accounts for suborning perjury."
