Chapter 9 - The Midnight Retraction

The digital clock on the hospital wall ticked past 11:45 PM as the speakerphone on Arthur Vance’s cell phone crackled in the center of our room.
"...Motion to withdraw emergency custody petition docket number four-zero-eight-two granted," a tired, gravelly judicial voice droned through the speaker. "The temporary hold is null and void. Case closed."
The line clicked dead.
Arthur stood near the window, his expensive suit looking suddenly too large for his frame, his hands trembling slightly as he slid his phone back into his pocket. He didn't look at Caleb, and he didn't look at Camilla. He simply walked past the security guard at the door without a word, vanishing down the dimly lit hospital corridor like a ghost.
Marcus Vance remained seated in the visitor's chair, his posture slumped, staring blankly at the forensic audit papers clutched in his shaking hands.
"Caleb," Marcus whispered, his voice stripped of all corporate arrogance. "If I sign the reinstatement... does this audit go public?"
"That depends entirely on whether you can run an honest firm for the next ten years, Marcus," Camilla answered before Caleb could speak. She stepped closer to the executive, her eyes unyielding. "You sign the papers, you publicly clear Caleb’s name on the corporate network by eight o'clock tomorrow morning, and you pretend you never saw that social media post. Otherwise, your name goes right beside Beatrice's on the federal indictment list."
Marcus didn't hesitate. He pulled a heavy gold fountain pen from his breast pocket, flipped to the final page of the reinstatement contract Camilla had produced from her briefcase, and rapidly scribbled his signature across the dotted line.
"It's done," Marcus muttered, standing up and dropping the papers onto the bedside table. He gave Caleb one last, complicated look before turning and walking out of the room into the quiet night.
The heavy sliding door closed, leaving just the four of us in the room: Caleb, myself, our sleeping son, and Camilla.
Caleb let out a long, shuddering breath that sounded like years of accumulated weight finally leaving his chest. He sank down onto the edge of my bed, burying his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking as silent tears finally broke through his control.
I reached out, resting my hand gently on the back of his head, pulling him close while holding our baby securely against my other arm.
"We won," I whispered, my voice thick with emotion.

Camilla watched us quietly from the foot of the bed, a soft, melancholic smile touching the corners of her lips. She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a small, old-fashioned brass key—the exact duplicate of the one she had used to unlock the truth about the Linwood estate.
