Chapter 7 - The Imposter's Blueprint

The flashlight beam shook violently in my hand, illuminating David’s face as he stood leaning casually against a massive server rack, his expression completely devoid of the frantic panic he had shown in the alleyway just an hour ago.

""How are you here?"" I breathed, the words barely escaping my constricted throat. We watched you drive away. The police—

""The police are currently looking for a decoy vehicle driven by one of Arthur Sterling's junior associates,"" David interrupted smoothly, stepping out of the shadows. He didn't look like a cornered white-collar criminal; he looked like a general inspecting his troops. He glanced around the high-tech attic with an almost nostalgic fondness. Impressive setup, isn't it? It took six years to build this offline relay network. No cloud storage, no digital footprint. Just pure, unadulterated control.

Dana didn't hesitate. With a low, ferocious growl, she lunged forward, swinging the heavy steel tire iron in a sweeping arc aimed straight at David's ribs.

In a movement so fast it defied belief, David ducked under the arc, stepped inside Dana's guard with lethal precision, and drove the heel of his palm upward into her sternum. The impact knocked the wind out of my sister in a violent gasp, sending her stumbling backward into a stack of cardboard storage boxes.

""Dana!"" I screamed, dropping my flashlight and rushing to her side as she struggled to catch her breath.

""Stay back, Chloe,"" Dana wheezed, her eyes locked on David with fierce, unbroken hatred. He's not a corporate lawyer. That's close-quarters military combat.

David sighed, casually straightening his silk tie. ""You really should feed your sister better protein, Chloe. She's losing her edge. Though, to be fair, she was always better suited for a padded canvas ring than the real world.""

""Who are you?"" I demanded, rising slowly to my feet, my voice trembling with a mixture of terror and white-hot rage. I pointed down at the open steamer trunk filled with fake passports and forged identities. If you aren't David Sinclair... who the hell have I been married to for the last eight years?

David walked over to the trunk, picked up one of the forged passports bearing his photograph, and flipped it open. The name printed on it was Agent Marcus Vance—Defense Intelligence Agency, Retired (Unofficial).

""David Sinclair died in a mountaineering accident in the Swiss Alps nine years ago, Chloe,"" he said, his voice dropping all pretense of warmth, hardening into a chilling, robotic cadence. I needed a clean, corporate-track American identity with zero criminal background to infiltrate Vanguard Holdings' black-budget money-laundering operations for the government. You happened to sit next to me at a charity gala in Chicago six months later. You were smart, beautiful, and completely unconnected to the intelligence grid. You were the perfect cover.

The room seemed to spin off its axis. Every anniversary, every shared laugh, every quiet Sunday morning drinking coffee on our front porch—it was all a manufactured performance, a tactical assignment executed by a ghost.

""And Ava?"" I choked out, tears finally breaking free, burning hot down my cheeks. Was our daughter just part of the cover story too?

David’s face flickered for a fraction of a second—a micro-expression of genuine hesitation before his professional mask slammed back down. ☕ Ava was... an unexpected variable, he admitted quietly. At first, yes. A biological necessity to cement the suburban illusion. But over the last five years, Chloe... I actually grew fond of the little girl. Which is why it deeply disappointed me when your sister broke my front door down and forced my hand.

""You let Marissa hit her with a hockey stick?"" I shrieked, the maternal fury overriding every ounce of fear in my body. You let that psycho torture my baby because of some corporate intelligence war?

""Marissa acted outside parameters,"" David said coldly. She was supposed to scare Ava into compliance so you would sign over the grandfather's trust fund to finance our final asset transfer. But Marissa has a sadistic streak I miscalculated. Still... you shouldn't have dug this deep, Chloe.

David reached into his suit jacket, his hand sliding toward a concealed shoulder holster. But before his fingers could wrap around the grip of his weapon, the floorboards beneath our feet shuddered with a deafening crash as the attic door was kicked completely off its hinges.

A dozen laser sights cut through the dusty air, bathing David in a grid of blinking red dots.

""Federal agents! Nobody move! Drop the weapon!"" a bullhorn voice echoed up the stairwell.

David froze, his hand hovering inches from his holster. For a second, I thought it was over—that the federal cavalry had finally arrived to save us. But David didn't look scared. Instead, a slow, terrifying smile crept across his lips.

He didn't raise his hands. He raised his left wrist, tapping the face of his tactical smartwatch twice, and whispered a single word into the built-in microphone: Execute Protocol Janus.
