Chapter 9 - The Lighthouse Ultimatum

The rain had finally slowed to a heavy, miserable mist by the time Dana’s truck rattled off the paved highway and onto the rocky, winding access road leading out to Blackwood Point. The old stone lighthouse stood like a jagged finger against the dark, churning expanse of Lake Michigan, its broken beacon spinning erratically in the wind, casting long, sweeping arcs of pale white light across the crashing waves below.
""You are not going in there alone, Chloe. Are you out of your mind?"" Dana said, slamming her foot on the brakes fifty yards away from the base of the lighthouse. She killed the engine and turned to face me in the dim dashboard light, her eyes blazing with fierce protection. That bastard is leading you into an ambush.
""If I don't go, he disappears with Ava forever, D,"" I said, my voice dead calm. I reached into the glove compartment, my fingers brushing against the cold steel of the backup pistol Dana had stashed there earlier. I pulled it out, checked the clip with practiced precision, and tucked it into the waistband of my jeans. And if he triggers that device on her bracelet... I can't live with the alternative.
Dana stared at me for three agonizing seconds, her jaw tight, before letting out a harsh, defeated sigh. Fine. You walk through the front doors. I’m going to scale the cliffside masonry and take the maintenance catwalk around the back. If he tries anything, I’ll drop him before he can blink.
""Be careful,"" I whispered, squeezing her hand.
I pushed the truck door open and stepped out into the freezing, salt-laden wind. The ground was slick with wet shale and decaying seaweed. Every step toward the heavy oak doors of the lighthouse felt like walking toward my own execution, but the thought of Ava sitting in that transport van kept my feet moving.
I reached the heavy wooden door. It was pushed slightly ajar, a sliver of yellow amber light spilling out onto the wet stone steps.
I pushed it open with the palm of my hand, stepping into the circular stone foyer. The smell of salt, damp stone, and stale cigarette smoke hung heavy in the air. In the center of the room, standing at the base of the winding iron staircase that spiraled up toward the lantern room, was David.
He wasn't wearing his suit jacket anymore; he wore a heavy tactical turtleneck, his sleeves rolled up to reveal a faded military tattoo on his forearm that I had never seen before in eight years of marriage.
""I knew you'd come alone, Chloe,"" David said, turning around slowly. He didn't have a gun drawn, but his hands rested casually near his waistband. You've always possessed a fatal sense of duty.
""Where is my daughter, David?"" I demanded, my hand resting firmly on the grip of the hidden pistol in my waistband. The van. Where is she?
David smiled, a sad, nostalgic expression that made my stomach churn. She's safe, Chloe. I told you that. She's parked two miles down the coastal road with a trusted associate who has orders to release her the moment our flight clearance is confirmed.
""I don't believe a single word that comes out of your mouth,"" I spat, taking a step forward. You aren't a husband. You aren't even a human being. You're just a parasite wearing someone else's skin.
David flinched slightly at the words, the smile fading from his lips, replaced by a cold, hardened shadow. Survival requires shedding old skin, Chloe. The man you married was real enough to you, wasn't he? Did you ever complain about the lifestyle? Did you ever question where the funding for our home, our investments, our security came from? You enjoyed the spoils of the assignment just as much as I did.
""Don't you dare put this on me!"" I screamed, drawing the pistol from my waistband and leveling it straight at his chest. You lied about who we are! You put our daughter in the crosshairs of a federal conspiracy!
David didn't even blink at the muzzle pointed at his heart. He just took a slow, deliberate step toward me. Go ahead, Chloe. Pull the trigger. But remember—if I die here tonight, the automated encryption key to unlock Ava's smartwatch locator and medical tether permanently deletes itself. You'll spend the rest of your life wondering where your daughter ended up.
My finger froze on the trigger. My breath hitched in my throat as the cold reality of his trap closed around me like a steel jaw.
Before David could speak another word, a deafening crash echoed from the upper landing above us.
Clang!
The heavy iron maintenance door on the second-level catwalk swung violently open, and a figure dropped from the rafters, landing with cat-like grace directly on top of the spiral staircase railing.
It was Dana.

Before David could draw his weapon, Dana vaulted down the central column like a human missile, driving both of her booted feet squarely into David's chest and sending him crashing backward against the stone wall with a bone-rattling thud.
