Chapter 5 - Point of No Return

The shockwave of the flashbang grenade threw Ryan backward against the mahogany doorframe, his ears ringing with a terrifying, high-pitched whine as blinding white magnesium light illuminated every corner of the vast room.

Glass rained down like a crystalline waterfall, shattering across the polished hardwood floors.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DOWN ON THE GROUND! DO IT NOW!"

Heavy tactical boots smashed through the ruined window frames.

Through the thick, acrid cloud of gray smoke pouring into the room, four heavily armored assault operators dressed in unmarked charcoal-grey uniforms burst into the great room, laser sights crisscrossing through the haze like neon red threads.

Before Callahan could draw his sidearm, the lead operator fired three suppressed rounds in rapid succession.

Thwip-thwip-thwip.

Callahan’s body jolted violently as the heavy subsonic rounds struck him in the center chest, driving him backward over the glass coffee table, where he collapsed in a motionless heap. His second-in-command tossed his rifle aside and slammed his hands onto his head, dropping to his knees instantly.

Ryan shook the static from his head, his military instincts kicking in as he leveled his Sig Sauer at the lead operator advancing through the smoke.

"DROP THE WEAPON, COMMANDER!" the lead operator bellowed, his voice amplified by a helmet-mounted comms unit. "DROP IT NOW OR WE WILL AUTHORIZE LETHAL FORCE!"

Ryan froze, taking in the scene with rapid tactical assessment.

These weren't Callahan’s syndicate enforcers. They weren't local El Dorado county deputies either.

They wore dark, tactical assault gear bearing the high-visibility insignia of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service—NCIS Special Operations—alongside agents from the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team.

"I’m Commander Ryan Mercer, US Navy!" Ryan shouted back, keeping his gun pointed toward the floor, but refusing to drop it. "This is my residence! These men are home intruders!"

A tall figure stepped through the shattered glass entryway, wearing a dark trench coat over a tailored suit, a silver federal badge pinned to his lapel. He pulled off his tactical night-vision visor, revealing cold, gray eyes and a sharp, scarred jawline.

Ryan recognized him immediately.

Special Agent-in-Charge Marcus Vance—Michael Vance’s estranged older brother, and the chief of NCIS Counter-Intelligence, Pacific Division.

"We know who you are, Commander," Agent Vance said, his voice cutting through the ringing in Ryan’s ears like a razor blade. "And we know exactly whose house this is."

Vance gestured to his team. Two operators moved with lightning speed, flanking Ryan and kicking his Sig Sauer out of his hand, slamming him violently face-first against the heavy stone fireplace. Heavy steel handcuffs snapped around Ryan’s wrists with brutal efficiency.

"What is the meaning of this, Vance?!" Ryan snarled, his cheek pressed flat against the cold granite hearth. "My family was being held hostage by predatory loan sharks!"

"Your family was being used as a cover story, Ryan," Vance said coldly, stepping closer and pulling a thick, yellow evidence folder from inside his trench coat. "You thought you were outsmarting everyone with your encrypted home servers and your off-grid network backups. But you made a fatal mistake."

Across the room, David was being untied from his chair by an FBI agent.

Despite his swollen lip and bruised face, a slow, sickening smile spread across David’s face as he looked at Ryan. He reached into his inner jacket pocket, pulled out a small, military-grade encrypted flash drive, and handed it directly to Agent Vance.

Ryan stared in horror. "David... what did you do?"

"I did what I had to do to protect myself, Ryan," David rasped through his bloody teeth, wiping his chin with the back of his sleeve. "You thought I was trying to steal your property deed? You thought I wanted a two-million-dollar mortgage?"

David chuckled—a dry, terrifying sound that turned Ryan’s blood to liquid nitrogen.

"I didn't care about the villa," David whispered, leaning in closer as the federal agents held Ryan pinned against the fireplace. "The mortgage application was just a decoy to force you to panic and remotely access your hidden, encrypted partition on the home server from San Diego. We needed you to unlock the firewalled server files yourself, Commander. Because only your biometric key could decrypt the vault."

Agent Vance opened the yellow folder, revealing dozens of high-resolution surveillance photographs showing Ryan at the San Diego naval shipyard, alongside printed transcripts of top-secret naval telemetry files concerning the Pacific Fleet’s autonomous drone defense network.

"Three hours ago, when you tried to stop the remote wipe from your apartment," Vance explained, his voice devoid of emotion, "you inadvertently bypassed the Department of Defense security protocols to save your late wife’s digital photos. In doing so, you routed classified military intelligence across an unsecured civilian gateway."

"That’s a lie!" Ryan roared, straining against the steel handcuffs until the metal bit deep into his wrists. "I didn't access any military files! David planted a rogue bridge on my network!"

"The digital forensics don't lie, Commander," Vance replied smoothly, signaling his men to lift Ryan to his feet. "The telemetry data was transmitted directly from your IP address to an offshore server in Macau twenty minutes ago. The wire transfer of $2.5 million from Apex Capital wasn't a loan for David—it was your payment for selling naval secrets to a foreign power."

Ryan looked at his father.

Robert Mercer was sitting on the floor, holding his broken ribs, refusing to meet Ryan’s eyes.

"Dad..." Ryan choked out, his voice cracking with a mixture of rage and profound heartbreak. "You knew? You helped him set me up?"

Robert swallowed hard, looking down at the marble floor stained with Callahan’s blood.

"You had everything, Ryan," Robert muttered bitterly, his voice trembling with years of buried resentment. "You had the career, the money, the villa... and you gave us nothing but hand-me-downs and charity. David offered us a way out. He said if we helped him pull the server data, we’d all be taken care of."

"He framed me for treason!" Ryan screamed.

"Take him to the transport vehicle," Agent Vance ordered sharply, ignoring the outburst. "Search the basement, secure the server hard drives, and call for a medical team."

"Wait!" Susan cried out from the corner, pulling herself up from the floor. "Marcus, wait! Ryan didn't do this! He came back to save us!"

"Be quiet, Susan!" Robert snapped at her, his voice harsh and desperate. "Don't say another word!"

As two heavily armed federal operators dragged Ryan toward the shattered glass doorway leading out into the howling blizzard, Ryan’s mind raced through the tactical reality of his situation.

His career was over. His honor was destroyed. His own family had sacrificed him to cover up a international espionage ring, framing him as a traitor to the country he had spent his entire life serving.

They stepped out onto the snowy patio.

The cold wind whipped Ryan’s hair across his face as the flashing red and blue lights of dozens of federal vehicles reflected off the snowpack.

Suddenly, a loud, sharp metallic click echoed from the dark treeline fifty yards away.

Through the swirling snow, the high-intensity red beam of a long-range sniper scope drifted out of the pine forest, moving past the federal agents, past Agent Vance, and settling directly onto the center of Ryan’s chest.

Ryan caught his breath.

It wasn't a federal laser sight.

It was blue-green—a military-grade targeting laser used exclusively by Apex Capital's high-level assassination units.

Callahan hadn't come alone.

A muffled rifle shot echoed through the mountain air—*THWIP*—and the federal agent holding Ryan’s left arm suddenly collapsed into the snow, a crimson hole blossoming through his tactical helmet.
