Chapter 7 - The Ghost in the Machine

The emergency backup generator hummed quietly in the dark bowels of the utility tunnel, casting a pale, sickly amber glow over Ethan’s face as he pulled a specialized pocket-sized hydraulic tool from his vest and slipped it onto the steel shackles binding Ryan’s wrists.

With a sharp pop, the heavy-duty handcuffs sprang open.

Ryan rubbed his raw, bleeding wrists, his eyes locked on his former comrade. “What are you doing here, Ethan? I thought you were in San Diego.”

“I was,” Ethan replied, his fingers flying across a ruggedized military laptop connected directly to the villa's severed server line. “Until my remote monitoring software flagged an unauthorized system override originating from a secure terminal inside the Pentagon’s naval intelligence directorate. Someone didn't just hack your house server, Ryan. They used your personal military credentials as a digital proxy to route stolen Pacific Fleet drone schematics straight to a shell corporation controlled by Marcus Vance.”

Ryan stared at him, the pieces of the nightmare finally snapping together with absolute, horrifying clarity. “Vance. It wasn't just David and my father... Marcus Vance orchestrated the entire framing operation.”

“Your brother-in-law is a degenerate gambler deep in debt to the Russian syndicate,” Ethan said without looking up from his screen. “Vance’s division needed a scapegoat to cover up a massive intelligence leak within the Pacific command. They found David, fed him the fake stock margin debt, promised him financial freedom if he helped them plant the files on your home server, and used your family as leverage to ensure you’d take the fall.”

“And my parents?” Ryan’s voice dropped to an icy, dangerous whisper. “Did they know it was treason?”

“Your father knew they were setting you up,” Ethan said grimly. “He thought you’d just be court-martialed and forced into a dishonorable discharge. He never imagined Vance’s men would bring live ammunition to clean up the loose ends.”

A sudden, sharp pounding echoed from the ceiling directly above them, followed by the muffled sound of frantic shouting.

“Clear the basement! Sweep every corridor! If Mercer is hiding down here, flush him out!”

Ethan slammed his laptop shut and grabbed a heavy tactical duffel bag from the floor, shoving it into Ryan's chest. “The federal team is locking down the estate. In five minutes, this entire mountain will be cordoned off by national guard roadblocks. If you walk out of here, you’re an active fugitive hunted by your own government.”

“I’m not running,” Ryan said, his jaw set in a hard, unyielding line. “They took my honor, they destroyed my life, and they used my family to do it. I’m going to get those hard drives back.”

“You can’t take on NCIS and the syndicate alone,” Ethan argued, pulling a secondary satellite communicator from his pocket.

“I’m not alone,” Ryan said, sliding a fresh magazine into his Sig Sauer pistol. “I have the truth. And right now, that makes me more dangerous than they are.”

Before Ethan could reply, the heavy steel door at the far end of the utility tunnel began to rattle under the force of a heavy breaching charge.
