Chapter 10 - The Breach

Elena didn't hesitate. As Marcus lunged out of the strobe-lit darkness, his hand reaching out to grab her by the collar, she brought the heavy brass letter opener down in a sharp, defensive arc, catching him squarely across the forearm.
Marcus let out a sharp cry of pain, stumbling backward against the mahogany desk and sending the remaining stacks of financial documents scattering into the air like wounded birds.
"Now, Julian!" Elena screamed.
Julian moved with terrifying speed, tackling Marcus hard around the waist and driving him down onto the floorboards just as another flash of lightning illuminated the room. The revolver flew from Marcus's hand, skidding across the glass-strewn floor and coming to rest near Clara's boots.
Clara dropped to her knees, scooping up the weapon with practiced precision, her hands steady as she clicked the safety engaged and pointed the barrel directly at Marcus's chest as he thrashed beneath Julian's weight.
"Stay down, Marcus," Clara warned, her voice cold as ice. "The game is over."
Before Marcus could spit out a retort, a blinding wall of white light flooded the conservatory windows from the front drive, accompanied by the wail of approaching sirens and the heavy thrumming rotors of a tactical helicopter descending onto the front lawn. Through the broken glass, the amber and blue emergency strobes painted the white walls in a frantic dance.
"Federal Marshal Service! Stay where you are and keep your hands where we can see them!" a bullhorn blared from outside, followed by the heavy, boots-on-gravel rush of multiple tactical units moving toward the side entrance.
Julian stepped back, wiping blood from his knuckles, and looked down at Marcus, who lay panting against the ruined rug, his tailored suit ruined by mud and shattered glass.

Elena stood frozen by the desk, the brass letter opener still clutched in her trembling hand, watching as the heavy oak doors of the conservatory were kicked off their remaining hinges by federal agents in full tactical gear.
The lead agent stepped into the room, his tactical light sweeping across the chaos before locking directly onto Elena. "Elena Vance?" he barked over the noise of the helicopter. "We have a warrant to secure the premises and take you into protective custody."
