Chapter 8 - The Shadow in the Foyer

Marcus stepped out of the shadows, his tailored suit immaculate despite the midnight hour, a cold, calculated smile playing at the corners of his mouth. He didn't look like a grieving brother or a cornered fugitive; he looked like a man who had just won a very long, very patient game of chess.

"Marcus?" Elena’s voice cracked, the word catching in her throat as she backed away instinctively toward the desk. "You... you were supposed to be on the redeye to London. Your flight logs—"

"Flight logs can be arranged, little sister, just like medical directives and offshore accounts," Marcus said smoothly, stepping further into the room. He didn't raise the gun, but his finger rested casually along the trigger guard, a silent reminder of who held all the cards. "Did you really think father left this empire to you out of love? You were always the sentimental one. The decorative placeholder while the real business was conducted behind closed doors."

Julian stepped defensively in front of Elena, his jaw set. "You’ve ruined everything, Marcus. The board will tear you apart once they find out what you did to the liquidity pools."

"The board?" Marcus laughed, a cold, hollow sound that echoed off the high glass ceiling. "Julian, my dear pragmatist, the board members are either in federal custody or sitting on a beach in Monaco thanking me for their severance packages. There is no board left. There is only the estate—and right now, the estate belongs to the primary surviving beneficiary."

"You forged the probate documents," Clara said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper as she slowly reached behind her toward the briefcase. "The signature on the 2021 codicil doesn't match the handwriting analysis from the probate court."

Marcus's eyes flicked to Clara, the smile fading from his face, replaced by a flash of hard, predatory steel. "Handwriting analysis can be bought, Clara. Just like loyalty. And speaking of loyalty..." He raised the barrel of the revolver just an inch, leveling it squarely at Julian's chest. "I suggest you step aside, Julian, unless you want your autopsy to read like a tragic casualty of a home invasion during a severe weather event."

Elena ignored the warning, shoving past Julian with a sudden, violent surge of adrenaline. "Do it, then," she challenged, stepping right up to the barrel of the gun. "Shoot me, Marcus. Because if you pull that trigger, the automatic escrow triggers a public release of every single financial wire from the last ten years—straight to the Department of Justice."

Marcus froze, his eyes narrowing as he searched her face for a bluff, while the wind outside howled with renewed fury, plunging the entire estate into total darkness as the backup generator finally blew.
