Chapter 10 - The Choice

The silence in the study was so absolute you could hear the grandfather clock ticking in the hallway outside.

Vanessa stared at the micro-recorder on the desk, her face draining of all color. She realized, with sudden, crushing clarity, that every word of her threat last night—every instruction to steal, every threat of violence, every confession of her plot with federal prosecutor Marcus Vance—was sitting on that tiny black device, captured in pristine digital audio.

"Where did you get that?" Vanessa whispered, her voice cracking.

"She got it from me," Luca said softly, never taking his eyes off me. He turned his head slowly to look at his fiancée. "Did you really think I would place a former employee in your household without giving her the means to protect herself against threats, Vanessa?"

"You set me up," Vanessa breathed, taking a step back until she hit the edge of the bookshelf. "The whole engagement... you knew what my family was doing from the beginning."

"I knew Salvatore's shipping lines were failing," Luca replied calmly. "I knew Marcus Vance was sniffing around my docks. And I knew you were desperate enough to try to sell me out to federal prosecutors to save your father's legacy. The only thing I didn't know was how far you were willing to go to pull it off."

Salvatore Bellini watched the exchange from behind his desk, his expression heavy with defeat. He didn't try to defend her. He simply bowed his head, accepting that the trap had finally snapped shut.

Luca turned back to me. His expression softened just a fraction—not enough to make him look warm, but enough to show a strange, intense respect.

"You had every opportunity to walk out of here with Salvatore's flash drive, or run to the feds with Vanessa's recording, and disappear," Luca said quietly. "Instead, you stood your ground in a room full of apex predators."

"I didn't have a choice," I answered, my chin held high. "You all made sure of that."

"True," Luca admitted, walking closer until he was standing just inches away. "Which brings us to the present."

He reached out, picking up the micro-recorder in one hand and the flash drive in the other. With a deliberate, unhurried motion, he dropped both devices into his suit pocket.

"The wedding is canceled," Luca announced, his voice echoing off the wood-paneled walls. He looked at Vanessa, who looked like she had been physically struck. "Your family's debt to Moretti Holdings is now called in full, effective immediately. You and your father have forty-eight hours to vacate this estate."

Vanessa let out a strangled sob, sliding down the bookshelf until she hit the floor, her grand social ambitions reduced to ash in a matter of seconds.

Luca didn't look down at her. He turned his gaze back to me.

"As for you, Olivia," Luca said, his gray eyes searching mine. "Your time as a housekeeper and your time as a spy are officially over. My chief of security position in the Chicago main office just opened up, and the previous occupant left behind a very clean desk."

I stared at him, my heart pounding, realizing the sheer magnitude of his offer. It wasn't an escape route; it was an invitation to step permanently across the line into his world.

"And if I say no?" I asked.

Luca smiled—a real, genuine smile that finally reached his eyes. "Then I'll personally drive you to the airport, buy you a first-class ticket anywhere in the world, and make sure no one from my world or the Bellini family ever bothers you again. Your choice, Olivia."
