Chapter 5 - The Hidden Message

Vanessa didn't have a choice. In front of Luca, she couldn't refuse his "generous gift" without raising immediate, dangerous suspicions about why she was so anxious to keep a simple housekeeper away from her personal estate.
By Sunday evening, my duffel bag had been transferred from the fourth-floor secure suite to a tiny, windowless servant's quarters in the basement of the Bellini family mansion on the North Side.
The contrast between the two estates was stark. While Luca’s mansion was a fortress of modern security and silent wealth, the Bellini estate was old money cracking at the foundation. Peeling wallpaper lined the back hallways, and the air smelled faintly of damp wood and expensive perfume used to cover up decay.
At 9:00 PM, a sharp knock rattled my door.
I opened it to find Vanessa standing in the dim hallway, wearing a silk robe, her blonde hair falling loosely over her shoulders. The polite society mask was entirely gone, replaced by the hardened glare of a woman playing a very dangerous game.
"Listen to me very carefully, Olivia," Vanessa whispered, stepping uninvited into the cramped room and backing me against the metal bedframe. "You think you've landed on your feet by cozying up to Luca. You think he's going to protect you. But you don't know what my family is capable of."
"I don't know anything, Miss Bellini," I whispered, keeping my eyes wide and submissive.
"Good. Keep it that way," Vanessa hissed, pressing a heavy, ornate brass skeleton key into my palm. Her fingers were ice-cold. "Tomorrow morning at 6 AM, you are going to go into my father’s private study on the second floor. You are going to open the bottom drawer of his mahogany filing cabinet, take out the manila folder labeled Project Vanguard, and bring it to me before anyone else wakes up."
I stared down at the heavy key in my hand, my breath catching in my throat. Project Vanguard. That wasn't just a shipping manifest—that had to be the federal indictment file Marcus Vance was building against Luca’s entire syndicate.
Vanessa leaned in close, her breath smelling faintly of gin. "Do this, and I'll make sure you leave Chicago with enough cash to start a new life anywhere you want. Refuse, and your body won't even make it to Lake Michigan."

She turned on her heel and glided down the dark hallway, leaving me alone in the silence of the basement.
My hands trembled as I clutched the brass key. Vanessa thought she had successfully turned me into her personal spy, a pawn she could control through fear. But she didn't know about the encrypted micro-recorder sewn into the lining of my collar—a device Luca had personally attached before sending me across town, recording every single word of her threat.
