Chapter 4 - The Federal Incursion

The red emergency strobes painted the grand hallway in long, sweeping shadows. Viktor spun away from Richard, raising his carbine toward the front entrance, his face draining of color as the heavy oak doors were blown off their heavy iron hinges by a synchronized explosive breach.

“Federal agents! FBI! Nobody move!”

The roar echoed through the mansion, followed by a sea of tactical shields, Kevlar helmets, and assault rifles pouring into the foyer. Leading the vanguard was a woman in a crisp federal windbreaker, her blonde hair tied back in a tactical ponytail, her service pistol raised and locked dead on Viktor’s chest.

Special Agent Sarah Vance didn't waste time negotiating.

“Drop the weapon! Drop it now or you will be engaged!” she screamed, her voice cutting through the blaring security alarms with absolute authority.

Viktor looked at the wall of tactical gear surrounding him, calculated the odds in a fraction of a second, and slowly lowered his combat knife, letting it drop to the polished marble floor with a heavy clatter. The second guard immediately followed suit, dropping his carbine and raising his hands behind his head as federal agents swarmed them, slamming them to the ground with practiced efficiency.

Vanessa backed away into the shadows of the hallway, her eyes wide with mounting panic, her manicured hands trembling as she tried to slip toward the service stairs.

“Don't even think about it, Vanessa,” a calm, icy voice called out from behind her.

Vanessa turned around to find two armed federal agents blocking the staircase, their weapons aimed squarely at her chest.

Agent Vance lowered her pistol slightly, stepping past the handcuffed mercenaries and walking directly toward Richard, who was pushing himself up from the wall, clutching his bruised ribs.

“Mr. Sterling?” Vance asked, flashing a quick federal badge before sliding it back into her pocket. “Special Agent Vance, FBI Cyber and Corporate Crimes Division. Are you injured?”

Richard ignored the pain in his side, his breath coming in ragged gasps as he scanned the swarming agents in his hallway. “My daughter. Sophie. She ran out into the woods toward the rear perimeter when these men breached the house. She’s only six. She’s wearing pajamas.”

Vance’s expression hardened instantly. She tapped the comms unit clipped to her shoulder. “Team Three, sweep the eastern woodline immediately. Thermal drones up now. We have a six-year-old child in light clothing out in the drop zone.”

“Copy that, Leader,” a voice crackled back through the static. “Thermal is scanning... wait. I’ve got a signature. Near the old boathouse by the lake. She’s moving, but she’s slowing down fast.”

Richard didn't wait to hear more. He shoved past Agent Vance, ignoring the protests of the surrounding officers, and broke into a dead sprint toward the rear glass doors that led out into the sprawling estate grounds.

The cold autumn rain was falling in sheets now, turning the manicured lawns into slick mud. The wind howled through the skeletal branches of the oak trees, whipping the freezing drizzle across Richard’s face as he plunged blindly into the dark, mist-filled woods.

“Sophie!” he screamed into the roaring wind, his voice cracking with desperation. “Sophie! Daddy’s coming!”

He ran through briars and thick brush, his expensive suit tearing, his hands scratched and bleeding, ignoring the sharp pain in his bruised ribs. Every second felt like an eternity. Every shadow in the woods looked like a trap.

After what felt like hours of agonizing pursuit, pushing past the dense tree line where the rocky shoreline of the private lake began, a faint, small sound cut through the howling wind.

A whimper.

Richard froze, holding his breath, straining his ears against the storm.

“...Daddy?”

The tiny voice came from beneath an overturned aluminum canoe resting beside the weathered wooden planks of the old boathouse.
