Chapter 5 - Beneath the Canoe

Richard dropped to his knees in the freezing mud, sliding the last few feet until he collided with the wooden side of the weathered canoe. His hands tore at the wet tarp and debris piled around the hull, throwing heavy stones and damp leaves aside with frantic strength.
“Sophie!” he gasped, his voice breaking as he reached into the dark cavity beneath the boat.
Small, trembling hands caught his fingers with a desperate, crushing grip.
“Daddy... I was so cold,” a tiny, shivering voice whispered from the dark.
Richard pulled the canoe slightly to the side, sliding it across the slick mud, and scooped his daughter into his arms. Sophie was ice cold to the touch, her lips tinged with a frightening shade of blue, her wrinkled pajamas soaked completely through. She curled into a tight ball against his chest, her whole body shaking with violent, uncontrollable shudders.
Richard ripped off his own damp suit jacket, wrapping it tightly around her small shoulders, and pulled her against his racing heart, trying to transfer every ounce of his body heat into her freezing frame.
“I’ve got you, baby. I’ve got you,” Richard choked out, hot tears mixing with the cold rain streaming down his cheeks. “You’re safe now. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again. I swear it.”
A beam of bright white light cut through the mist above them, accompanied by the heavy crunch of tactical boots on gravel.
“Over here! We’ve got them!” Agent Vance’s voice called out over the wind.
Within seconds, federal medics and agents swarmed the boathouse shoreline. An emergency thermal blanket was instantly wrapped around Sophie’s shivering body, and a medic pressed an oxygen mask lightly over her face as they loaded her onto a heated stretcher.
Richard refused to let go of her hand, walking right beside the stretcher as they hurried back toward the main house where a convoy of ambulances and federal vans had turned the driveway into a blazing sea of flashing red and blue lights.
As they rolled Sophie toward the back of the ambulance, Agent Vance stepped up beside Richard, handing him a dry wool blanket and a cup of steaming black coffee from a mobile unit.
“She’s suffering from mild hypothermia and exhaustion, Mr. Sterling, but her vitals are stabilizing,” Vance said quietly, watching the medics work. “Paramedics are taking her to Westchester General right now. You should go with her.”
Richard took the blanket, wrapping it over his shoulders, his dark eyes fixed on the ambulance doors as they closed. He turned slowly to face Vance, his jaw clenched so hard his teeth ached.
“You mentioned a client back in the hallway,” Richard said, his voice dangerously low. “Who ordered this? Who paid Viktor and Vanessa to destroy my family?”
Vance pulled a small leather folder from her windbreaker, flipping it open to reveal a printed corporate flowchart and a series of scanned bank wire receipts routed through the Cayman Islands.
“We’ve been tracking this syndicate for fourteen months,” Vance said, her expression grim. “They don't just target wealthy executives for extortion. They systematically infiltrate high-net-worth households through domestic staff placements, sabotage corporate oversight, and slowly isolate the target until they are forced to sign over controlling shares of their assets under duress.”
She pointed a finger at a name at the top of the corporate flowchart.
Richard stared at the name, and the blood froze entirely in his veins.
It wasn't a corporate competitor. It wasn't an anonymous Wall Street hedge fund.
It was the name of his own younger brother—David Sterling—whom Richard had legally bought out of the family business three years ago after discovering he was embezzling funds from the foundation.
“David,” Richard whispered, the single word feeling like a physical weight crushing his chest.

“Not just David,” Vance said, flipping the page to reveal a second dossier. “According to our decrypted comms from Viktor’s tactical unit, David didn't act alone. He had a silent partner inside your own executive board. Someone who signed off on Vanessa’s background check, bypassed security protocols, and set this entire trap into motion.”
Richard stared at the second name on the paper, and the final piece of the devastating puzzle clicked violently into place.
