Chapter 6 - The Voice on the Line

The cold, cultivated cadence of the stranger’s voice over the speakerphone hung heavily in the sterile air of the hospital room. It didn't sound like a petty criminal or a desperate street thug; it sounded corporate, surgical, and utterly devoid of human empathy.
"You've got thirty seconds to state your business before I track this signal and bring federal marshals to your doorstep," Marcus replied, his voice dropping into that chilling, flat register that brooked no argument. He kept his stance balanced, one foot planted firmly near the doorframe, eyes scanning the dim hallway where two unconscious intruders lay crumpled against the wall.
A low, dry chuckle crackled through the speaker. "Federal marshals, Mr. Vance? Please. You of all people should know how easily federal bureaucracy can be redirected when the right offshore accounts are credited. You retired from the force to escape politics, didn't you? Why throw your remaining years away protecting a girl who has no idea what kind of wasp nest she’s kicked?"
"Try me," Marcus said simply.
"Listen to me, Commander," the voice hardened, losing its playful edge. "Chloe Miller has a digital thumb drive hidden inside that yellow baby blanket she’s clutching right now. It doesn't just contain Derek’s embezzlement logs for Apex Logistics. It contains the shell company routing numbers for every illicit weapons shipment and political payoff our syndicate has funneled through the Midwest for the past five years. Derek thought he was just stealing gambling money. He didn't realize he stole the keys to our entire operation."
My breath hitched in my throat. I looked down at tiny Lily resting in my arms, and then down at the yellow knitted blanket bunched up beneath her. I had never noticed anything unusual about the fabric, let alone a hidden thumb drive. But as my fingers grazed the inner lining of the hem, I felt a hard, rectangular ridge stitched securely inside the fabric.
Derek must have slipped it there the night he ransacked the house weeks ago, using my own nursery decorations as a dead drop without my knowledge.
"I don't know anything about a thumb drive!" I cried out, my voice cracking with panic.
"Save it, Miss Miller," the voice sneered. "My associates in the hallway were just the advance team. The local precinct is currently under our payroll, and the reinforcements outside are wrapping up their sweep of this facility. You have two choices: leave the baby and the drive on the floor of that room and walk out the back fire escape alone, or watch the entire maternity ward burn to the ground with everyone inside."
The line went dead with a sharp click.
Silence descended upon the room once more, heavier and more suffocating than before. I stared down at the baby blanket, trembling so violently I thought I might drop Lily.
"Marcus..." I whispered, tears blinding my vision. "What do we do? He's right. If they have the police... if they're willing to burn the hospital down..."
"They're bluffing about burning the building," Marcus said, stepping away from the door and pulling a small, black tactical pocketknife from his belt. "Arson draws too much federal heat, even for them. But they are coming back with heavier guns, and we have about ninety seconds before the corrupt patrol units arrive to clear the floor."
Without waiting for me to answer, Marcus dropped to one knee beside the bed. With surgical precision, he sliced open the hem of the yellow blanket. A tiny, black, military-grade encrypted thumb drive fell out onto the white bedsheets.
Marcus picked it up, pocketed it instantly, and ripped off a strip of fabric to bind the open hem back together so it looked untouched.
"Get up, Chloe. We're moving," Marcus commanded, his eyes blazing with a fierce, protective intensity.
"Moving where? I just had a C-section!" I sobbed, clutching Lily tightly to my chest.

"To the roof," Marcus said grimly. "My old extraction chopper from my private security days is sitting on the helipad three blocks over, but we won't make it to the streets. The ground level belongs to them now."
