Chapter 8 - Fire on the Asphalt

The flare gun roared with a concussive blast that sounded like a canon in the enclosed concrete garage.
A streak of blinding, white-hot magnesium tore across the ten-foot gap between Marcus and the Escalade, punching straight through the center of the vehicle's windshield with a sickening crunch of shattered glass.
Victor threw his arms over his face, stumbling backward with a curse as blinding white fire erupted inside the cab of the SUV. Within seconds, the dashboard was engulfed in a ferocious, roaring blaze of thick black smoke and snapping electrical sparks.
"Move! Now!" Marcus yelled, grabbing my arm and pulling me forward while the gunmen inside the Escalade scrambled to escape the burning wreck.
We sprinted past the burning vehicle, our footsteps echoing against the concrete as the heat scorched the back of my neck. Behind us, panicked shouts erupted as the syndicate thugs fought to drag themselves out of the smoke-filled doors.
We reached the opposite side of the parking deck, where a rusted chain-link gate led to the exterior fire escape stairs dropping down into the alleyway behind the block. Marcus kicked the gate open with a single, brutal boot-strike, sending the rusted padlock flying into the dark abyss below.
"Down the stairs, Chloe! Don't look back!" Marcus ordered, pushing me onto the metal grating.
I gripped Lily tightly to my chest, my legs shaking with exhaustion as I hurried down the metal steps, the wind howling around us. Marcus covered our six, his eyes scanning the alley below for any signs of backup.
We hit the damp asphalt of the alleyway just as the wail of distant police sirens began to echo down Elm Street—real police sirens this time, not the corrupt municipal patrol units we had been warned about.
"Where are we going?" I gasped, leaning against a brick wall to catch my breath as a sharp contraction ripped through my abdomen.
"My safe house," Marcus said, grabbing my arm to support my weight. "Three blocks over. My old garage is rigged with encrypted comms and federal drop boxes. Once we get the thumb drive uploaded to my former contact at the Department of Justice, this entire syndicate goes down overnight."
"And Derek?" I asked, looking up at him through tear-filled eyes. "What happens to him?"
"Derek dug his own grave the moment he sold out to Victor Vance," Marcus replied grimly. "The federal indictment for embezzlement, corporate espionage, and racketeering will keep him behind bars for the rest of his natural life. He'll never come near you or Lily again."
A profound wave of relief washed over me, mixing with the exhaustion and lingering trauma. For the first time in months, the heavy, suffocating cloud of fear that had hung over my head began to lift.
We made our way through the shadowy alleys of the suburb, ducking behind industrial dumpsters and avoiding the main streets until we reached a modest, unassuming ranch-style house at the end of a dead-end lane.
Marcus unlocked the heavy back door, ushering us inside into a warm, softly lit kitchen that looked completely normal on the surface—until he punched a security code into the wall panel, and a section of the pantry slid open to reveal a hidden, high-tech command center humming with banks of computer servers.

"Welcome to retirement," Marcus muttered with a grim, exhausted smile.
