Chapter 10 - The New Foundation

Two weeks later, the Newport autumn set in with a crisp, brilliant clarity. The leaves along the grand estate driveway turned into vibrant shades of amber, gold, and deep crimson, fluttering down like falling confetti over the manicured lawns.

Life on the Mercer estate had returned to a peaceful, steady rhythm—one far more authentic than the polished, suffocating perfection Brooke had tried to enforce.

Down by the eastern cottage, the sound of laughter echoed across the lawn as Noah chased a red-and-blue stunt kite high into the clear coastal wind, with Dominic standing nearby guiding the string and Natalie watching from the porch with a warm cup of coffee in her hands.

Inside the main study, the heavy oak doors stood wide open, letting the fresh ocean breeze sweep through the room.

Emma sat at the partner’s desk, reviewing the updated property registry and trust allocations. Every single line item had been verified, secured, and legally locked down in Natalie and Noah’s name, ensuring their legacy could never be touched by corporate greed or malicious ambition again.

A shadow fell across the desk.

Emma looked up.

Dominic stood in the doorway, holding a fresh cup of black coffee in one hand and a thick manila folder in the other. He had shed his suit jacket entirely, wearing only a dark gray button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up, looking more like the master of his own destiny than a man trapped by his own empire.

"Checking my work?" Dominic asked, a teasing glint in his dark eyes as he walked over and set the coffee cup beside her keyboard.

"Always," Emma replied, smiling as she closed the ledger. "An estate manager’s job is never truly finished, Mr. Mercer. Especially when the boss has a habit of flying halfway across the world to surprise people."

Dominic chuckled, pulling up a leather chair and sitting down beside her desk. He didn't open the manila folder. Instead, he looked out the window toward the east cottage, watching his nephew pull the kite higher into the autumn sky.

"My mother used to say that a house is only as strong as the foundation underneath it," Dominic said quietly, his voice carrying a deep, reflective weight. "For a long time, I thought foundation meant money, power, and high walls." He turned his gaze back to Emma, his eyes meeting hers with absolute clarity. "I was wrong. Foundation is the people who stand by you when the walls start to crumble."

Emma felt a warmth spread through her chest, steady and enduring. She reached out, placing her hand over his across the wooden desk.

"Well," Emma smiled softly, her eyes shining with quiet confidence. "Looks like we finally built one that's going to last."
