Chapter 9 - The Ghost in the Library

Back in the main mansion, the grand estate was quiet once again, settling back into its accustomed rhythms under Emma’s expert management.
Up in the second-floor library, the afternoon light streamed through the towering stained-glass windows, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. The mahogany partner’s desk where Marcus had attempted his illegal wire transfer was completely clean, the compromised terminal wiped, reset, and secured behind a newly installed biometric firewall that only Dominic and Emma could access.
Emma stood by the towering shelves, returning a leather-bound land grant ledger to its proper slot in the Gilded Age archives.
The heavy library doors clicked open.
Footsteps echoed softly across the Persian rug. Emma didn't need to turn around to know who it was; she could recognize the measured, deliberate cadence of Dominic’s stride anywhere.
"The federal marshals finished clearing out the guest wing," Dominic said, his voice calm as he walked over to stand near the window, looking out toward the distant shoreline where the waves crashed against the jagged rocks. "Brooke’s personal effects have been shipped to her father’s legal offices in Boston. As far as Newport society is concerned, the wedding was simply called off due to 'unforeseen family circumstances.'"
Emma closed the ledger and turned around, leaning her hips lightly against the edge of the mahogany desk. "And the board meetings for Monday?"
"Postponed," Dominic said, turning his head to look at her. "I spent the last two hours on the phone with the senior partners. I’m restructuring our entire compliance department. No more blind trust, no more third-party legal proxies without dual-key authorization." He paused, a faint, wry smile touching his lips. "And I appointed a new chief of estate operations to oversee the regional portfolio."
Emma raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms over her crisp white blouse. "Oh? And who is the lucky candidate? Someone from the Boston firm?"
"No," Dominic said, taking a slow step toward her. "Someone who already manages the most chaotic household in New England without breaking a sweat, keeps me out of federal prison, and knows where all the actual bodies are buried."
Emma’s breath hitched slightly, though she kept her expression perfectly composed. "That sounds like a heavy promotion, Mr. Mercer. Does it come with a corner office and a raise?"
"It comes with complete autonomy, a lifetime contract, and whatever salary you care to write down on the ledger," Dominic said, stopping just two feet away from her. His dark eyes softened, losing the icy edge that had terrorized half the business world for a decade. "Provided you're willing to stick around and help me clean up the rest of the mess."
Emma looked up into his eyes, reading the genuine sincerity written across his face. The tension that had gripped the estate for months finally evaporated completely, replaced by a quiet, unshakable understanding.

"I don't plan on going anywhere, Dominic," Emma whispered softly.
