Chapter 5 - The Knock on the Door

By 3:00 PM, the humiliation at corporate headquarters had fully translated into domestic desperation.
I was sitting in my private study reviewing a quarterly acquisition report for a European logistics firm when the low, muffled chime of my penthouse’s private elevator bell echoed through the foyer.
Frown lines creaked across my forehead. Very few people had direct access to my private elevator code: my executive assistant, Marcus Vance, and my head of security.
I stood up smoothly, smoothing down the front of my St. John pantsuit, and walked out into the expansive marble-floored hallway.
Through the secure video intercom panel beside the double mahogany doors, I saw them.
Jonathan and Florence.
They looked like a storm had dragged them through a hedge backwards. Jonathan’s expensive tie was loose and crooked, his hair disheveled from him pulling at it in frustration, and the skin beneath his eyes was bruised with exhaustion. Florence stood beside him, clutching her designer handbag like a shield, her face twisted in a mask of bitter, desperate entitlement.
Jonathan pounded his fist against the heavy wood of my door.
"Charlotte! I know you're in there!" Jonathan’s voice hollered, muffled by the soundproofing. "Open the damn door! We need to talk right now!"
I didn't move. I crossed my arms over my chest and watched them through the high-definition fisheye camera. It was poetic justice. Just twenty-four hours ago, standing in their cramped suburban living room, I had been the one trapped, ordered around, and treated like an unwanted servant. Now, they were standing outside my fortress like pathetic beggars freezing in the rain.
Jonathan pounded again, harder this time.
"Charlotte, stop playing games! NexoCloud is collapsing! The board just ousted me, the accounts are frozen, and the federal auditors are seizing our assets! Do you hear me? Everything we worked for is gone!"
Florence leaned in close to the intercom speaker, her voice shrill and venomous. "Open this door this instant, you ungrateful little tramp! You caused all of this! If you hadn't walked out over a simple bucket of laundry like a spoiled princess, none of this would have happened! You cursed my son's business!"
A cold, humorless smile touched my lips. Cursed his business. If only she knew.
I reached out, tapped the intercom control panel on the wall, and clicked the audio transmit button. My voice echoed out through the hallway speaker, amplified, crisp, and utterly devoid of the meekness I had faked for two years.
"You have thirty seconds to step away from my door," I said calmly.
In the hallway, both Jonathan and Florence froze. Jonathan jerked his head up toward the camera lens, his eyes wide with shock and confusion.
"Charlotte?" Jonathan stuttered, his voice cracking. "Wh—why does your voice sound like that? And where the hell are you? What is this place?"
"This place," I replied smoothly, "is my home. A thirty-two-thousand-square-foot luxury penthouse overlooking downtown Atlanta. Property ID: Unit 35-North, registered exclusively in the name of Charlotte Vance."
Silence hung heavy in the hallway. Jonathan blinked rapidly, trying to process the words.
"Vance?" Jonathan whispered. "What... what do you mean Vance? Your name is Davis. Charlotte Davis. Orphan from Baltimore."
"My name," I said, every syllable dropping like a lead weight, "is Charlotte Vance. President and Managing Director of Vanguard Capital. The sole institutional authority behind the $120 million Series B funding round you were so desperately counting on."
Jonathan staggered backward as if he had been physically struck in the chest. He grabbed onto the hallway wall for balance, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.
"Vanguard..." Jonathan breathed, the color draining entirely from his face. "You... you're Vanguard? You're the one who pulled the funding?"
"I didn't just pull the funding, Jonathan," I said, a cold edge cutting through my tone. "I audited your fraudulent expense reports, flagged your brother’s shell company kickbacks, and personally signed the execution order that just liquidated your precious company."
Florence let out a blood-curdling shriek from the hallway. "Liar! You're a dirty little liar! My son is a genius! You're just a nobody trying to ruin him!"
"You wanted a wife who would serve the men, Florence," I continued, ignoring her screeching. "You wanted someone you could boss around, humiliate, and force to wash dirty laundry on her wedding night. Well, you got your answer. But the person you humiliated wasn't a defenseless orphan."
I leaned closer to the intercom microphone.
"You just bit the hand that fed your entire family. And now, you get to watch it starve."
"Charlotte! Please!" Jonathan wailed, dropping to his knees right there in the hallway outside my door, pressing his face against the security panel. "Please, Charlotte! I'm sorry! I was stressed, my mother was in my head, I didn't mean it! We can fix this! We're married! We're husband and wife!"
"We were husband and wife," I corrected coldly. "Until you raised your hand against me. Enjoy bankruptcy court tomorrow morning, Jonathan. Papers will be waiting for you."
I pressed the button on my wall panel, cutting the audio feed completely.

In the hallway, Jonathan’s frantic, desperate screaming echoed against the wood one last time before the private elevator bell chimed, signaling their permanent eviction from my world.
