Chapter 6 - The Freefall Begins

The morning air outside the federal bankruptcy court on Peachtree Street was crisp, carrying the sharp bite of late autumn. By 8:30 AM, the media trucks had already parked along the curb, their satellite dishes raised toward the gray sky like metallic flowers waiting for blood. Word travels fast in Atlanta’s corporate circles, and the catastrophic collapse of NexoCloud—a startup valued at nearly half a billion dollars just forty-eight hours prior—was the biggest financial scandal of the fiscal year.

Inside the sleek, leather-lined interior of my executive study, I watched the live broadcast on Bloomberg News through a multi-monitor display.

The camera crew was zoomed in tightly on the front steps of the courthouse. A battered black sedan pulled up to the curb, and out tumbled Jonathan and his brother Marcus. They looked like ghosts. Jonathan’s custom designer suit, which had looked so crisp and arrogant during his board meeting pitch, now hung loosely on his frame as if he had lost ten pounds in a single night. His eyes were bloodshot, his hair unwashed, and the microphone boom mics thrust into his face seemed to overwhelm him instantly.

"Mr. Miller! Mr. Miller! Is it true that Vanguard Capital revoked your $120 million funding due to executive fraud?" shouted a reporter from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, thrusting a recorder toward his mouth.

Jonathan raised a trembling hand to shield his eyes from the glare of camera flashes. "No—that’s completely false! There was a clerical error! We are working with legal counsel to resolve an internal banking miscommunication—"

"Mr. Miller! What about the federal asset seizure ordered by the SEC this morning?" another reporter yelled over the din. "Sources confirm your corporate accounts have been frozen under suspicion of running shell-company kickbacks through your brother's title!"

Marcus tried to push past the wall of reporters, shoving a cameraman out of the way. "Get a camera out of my face, you vultures! There’s no fraud! It’s a targeted hit job!"

"A hit job by whom, Mr. Miller?"

Jonathan stopped dead on the top step. He looked directly into the primary camera lens, his expression twisting into a mixture of absolute terror and burning hatred. For a split second, I could tell he wanted to scream my real name—to tell the world that the terrifying force behind Vanguard Capital was the quiet, meek woman he had tried to force into washing his family's underwear just days ago. But he couldn't. If he admitted that Charlotte Davis and Charlotte Vance were the same person, he would also have to explain how he had abused, humiliated, and physically struck the billionaire managing director of the fund holding his entire financial lifeline.

Instead, his lips trembled, he swallowed hard, and he bolted through the heavy glass doors of the courthouse, ducking away from the lights.

I took a slow, calm sip of my morning tea, watching the live feed cut back to the anchor desk in New York.

My phone buzzed on the mahogany desk. It was a secure notification from Marcus Vance, my chief operating officer.

“Ms. Vance,” the text read. “Federal marshals have officially seized NexoCloud’s primary R&D facility in Alpharetta. Assets are being inventoried for liquidation. The court-appointed receiver has accepted our restructuring bid for their patents at pennies on the dollar. The acquisition will clear legal review by Tuesday.”

I tapped out a brief reply: “Proceed. Ensure our legal team blocks any personal bankruptcy exemptions for Jonathan or his brother. Every cent of those fraudulent executive bonuses needs to be clawed back.”

“Understood, ma’am.”

I locked the screen and leaned back in my chair. NexoCloud was dead. The empire Jonathan had built on arrogance, cheap credit, and the unpaid labor of women in his household had evaporated into the legal ether. But as satisfying as it was to watch his professional life crumble, the game wasn't over yet.

There was still Florence. And Florence was about to learn that when you wake a sleeping titan, you don't just get burned—you get vaporized.
