Chapter 8 - The Siege at the Manor

By 11:00 PM, a blinding blizzard had descended upon the Chugach Mountains, howling through the pine trees and driving thick, blinding sheets of snow horizontally across the forty-acre Harrington estate.
Inside the grand timber manor, all the lights were turned off, plunging the vast, vaulted rooms into deep, suffocating darkness. The roaring fire in the stone hearth had been extinguished, replaced by the dead, freezing chill of a house left to the winter elements.
Upstairs in the master bedroom, I stood near the frosted windowpane, looking out over the winding gravel driveway below. My tactical vest was strapped securely over a dark thermal turtleneck, the suppressed tactical carbine resting easily in my gloved hands, the familiar black crowned-wraith tattoo hidden beneath layers of ballistic armor.
Marcus’s voice hissed quietly through my encrypted earpiece. “Shadow. Perimeter sensors are tripping. North gate. Three unmarked snowmobiles and a heavy-duty utility vehicle just breached the property line. Six armed combatants, wearing cold-weather tactical gear. No local law enforcement insignia. Classic Veles Global hit squad.”
"Let them clear the treeline," I whispered back into the comms mic. "Don't fire until they reach the main porch."
“Copy that. Snipers on the ridge have them in crosshairs. Waiting for your mark.”
I watched through the infrared scope of my carbine as the three snowmobiles cut their engines fifty yards down the driveway, gliding silently to a halt near the frozen greenhouse. The six figures dismounted, their breath pluming white in the sub-zero air, carrying suppressed automatic rifles and heavy breaching tools. They moved with professional, military precision—men trained in Eastern European black ops, survivors of the very syndicates I had spent a decade dismantling.
They thought this was an easy recovery mission. They thought they were walking into a house abandoned by panicked aristocrats.
"Stand by," I murmured into the earpiece.
The lead operative—a thick-necked brute wearing a heavy tactical parka—waved his hand forward, signaling his team to spread out toward the shattered front doors of the manor. Two men flanked the sides, covering the windows, while three approached the grand double doors with a hydraulic breaching ram.
Three... two... one...
"Execute," I whispered.
The night exploded into violent, blinding fury.
From the wooded ridge above the property, synchronized sniper fire cracked through the howling wind. The two operatives covering the flanks dropped instantly into the snow without a sound, neutralized with surgical precision.
At the front entrance, the heavy hydraulic ram slammed into the splintered wood of the front door just as my operatives inside triggered the claymore-style stun mines placed beneath the porch decking.
A deafening roar shook the foundations of the manor. A blinding wall of white light and concussive force blasted outward, throwing the three breaching operatives backward through the air like discarded dolls. They crashed hard against the frozen gravel, their weapons scattering across the snow.
Before the smoke could clear, the side doors of the manor swung open, and Marcus led a four-man assault team into the driveway, securing the surviving combatants with rapid, ruthless efficiency. Plastic zip-ties clicked tightly around wrists, heavy boots kicked weapons away into the snowdrifts, and within ninety seconds, the entire Veles Global strike team was neutralized, bleeding, and bound in the freezing dark.
I stepped out onto the second-floor balcony, looking down over the chaotic scene through the swirling blizzard snow.
Marcus walked over to the groaning lead operative, kicked him roughly in the ribs to force him onto his knees, and ripped the tactical balaclava off the man's face.
The brute spat a mouthful of blood onto the snow, glaring up at the balcony where I stood silently in the shadows. "You... you're dead," the operative wheezed, his Russian accent thick and harsh through the wind. "Rostov will... Rostov will hunt you to the ends of the earth!"
I stepped forward into the faint amber glow of the emergency floodlights Marcus had just activated, resting my carbine casually across my forearm.
"Tell Viktor Rostov," I said, my voice carrying clearly over the howling wind, "that if he wants my attention, he can come out of his European hole and look for me himself. But tell him to bring an army. Because the next time one of his men sets foot on my property, I won't just capture them. I'll send their heads back to Zurich in a cooler."
The operative’s face drained of color. He recognized the voice. He recognized the stance. And as his eyes drifted upward and caught the faint outline of the crowned-wraith symbol stitched onto the shoulder of my tactical vest, all the fight died out of him instantly.
"The... the Crimson Shadow," he whispered in abject terror.

"Take them away," I ordered, turning back toward the warmth of the dark manor. "Interrogate the lead survivor in the basement. I want to know every single asset Veles Global still has active on American soil."
