Chapter 2 - The Silent Ward

The fluorescent lights of Montgomery County General Hospital buzzed with a sterile, mocking indifference. Inside Trauma Room 3, the rhythmic, electronic beep of the heart monitor was the only tether keeping reality intact.

Harrison stood outside the heavy double doors, his back pressed against the pale green cinderblock wall. His expensive suit was ruined—stiffened with dried dark blood, the lapels ruined by Khloe’s desperate, dying grip. His hands were wrapped in sterile gauze, the torn palms stinging fiercely from the antiseptic the ER nurse had forced him to use, but he didn't feel it. Physical pain was a luxury reserved for men who weren't drowning in an ocean of rage.

Dr. Alan Vance pushed through the swinging doors, peeling off his blood-spattered latex gloves and dropping them into a biohazard bin. His face was a mask of professional exhaustion and deep, unfiltered sorrow. He walked over to Harrison, stopping a few feet away, respecting the impenetrable aura of danger radiating from the attorney.

"Dr. Vance," Harrison said, his voice terrifyingly steady, stripped of all human inflection. "Give it to me straight. No medical jargon."

"We lost the baby, Harrison," Vance said softly, unable to hold the lawyer's gaze. "At eight months, the trauma was catastrophic. There was internal tearing, and placental abruption. By the time the paramedics wheeled her through our doors, there was no cardiac activity left in the fetus. We tried emergency intervention, but… it was already over."

The air in the hallway seemed to vanish. Harrison didn't cry. He didn't punch the wall. He simply closed his eyes for three agonizing seconds, his jaw locking so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek.

"And Khloe?" Harrison asked, his voice dropping an octave, turning into a low, rumbling threat directed at the universe itself.

"She’s alive, but it’s touch and go," Vance continued, rubbing the back of his neck. "We managed to stop the internal hemorrhaging and performed an emergency D&C to clear the uterine trauma. She’s in a medically induced coma right now to help her body cope with the shock. She lost a massive amount of blood. The next twenty-four hours are critical. If she develops sepsis or renal failure..." Vance trailed off, shaking his head. "I'm sorry, Harrison. I truly am."

"Thank you, Alan," Harrison said, his tone chillingly polite. "Can I see her?"

"Ten minutes. Only ten. She’s hooked up to a ventilator."

Harrison pushed past the doctor and slipped into the sterile chill of the intensive care unit. Khloe looked impossibly small in the massive hospital bed. Her face, usually so warm and full of life, was deathly pale, contrasting sharply with the dark bruises forming along her jawline where she had hit the marble. A clear plastic tube protruded from her mouth, connected to a mechanical pump that hissed rhythmically with every artificial breath it forced into her lungs.

He walked to the bedside, his raw hands hovering over her cold, limp fingers before he gently wrapped his gauze-wrapped knuckles around her hand.

"You heard him, sweet girl," Harrison whispered, leaning down so his lips brushed her ear, his voice breaking despite his iron will. "You lost our little niece. They took her from you. They took her from both of us."

He paused, a dark, dangerous light flashing in his hazel eyes as he straightened up, staring down at his sleeping sister with an expression of terrifying devotion.

"I swear to you on our parents' graves, Khloe, by the time I am finished with Richard and that vile creature he brought into our lives, they won't just wish they were in prison. They will beg for it. And I will deny them even that mercy."

Thirty minutes later, Harrison stepped back out into the hospital corridor. His phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out with his left hand, wincing slightly as the motion pulled at his torn palm. The screen flashed a text message from Marcus Vance, his senior investigator and former FBI digital forensics expert:

Boss. Local PD just released Richard and Vanessa. No arrest made. District Attorney’s office classified it as an "accidental fall during a heated domestic altercation." Richard’s firm pulled strings. They’re heading back to the Main Line estate now.

Harrison stared at the screen, a slow, humorless smile spreading across his lips—a terrifying sight that would have sent any opposing counsel running for the hills.

"Accidental," Harrison murmured to the empty hallway. "Let's see how long that narrative holds up when I rip their entire world down to the studs."
