Chapter 9 - Awakening in the Dark

The rhythmic, electronic beep of the heart monitor was the first thing Khloe Harrington became aware of. It sounded distant, echoing through a thick, cotton-like fog that clouded her brain.
She tried to move her fingers, but her limbs felt like lead weights. A sharp, burning ache radiated across her abdomen, reminding her of a nightmare she desperately wished she could wake up from.
The stairs.
The push.
The blood.
The baby.
Khloe’s eyes flew open, her vision blurry under the harsh fluorescent glare of the hospital ceiling. She let out a ragged gasp, trying to sit up, but a strong, gentle hand immediately rested on her shoulder, pushing her back down against the crisp white sheets.
"Easy, sweet girl. Don't move too fast. You’re still hooked up to IV lines," a familiar, rich voice murmured softly.
Khloe turned her head to the side. Harrison sat in a vinyl armchair beside the bed. He looked exhausted—his dark hair slightly disheveled, deep purple shadows bruised beneath his eyes, his suit jacket draped over the back of the chair. But his hazel eyes were shining with an intense, overwhelming wave of fierce, protective love.
"Harry…" Khloe whispered, her voice a dry, gravelly scratch. She tried to swallow, her throat burning. "The… the baby… Harrison, tell me my baby is okay. Please."
Harrison’s expression tightened. He reached out, his gauze-wrapped fingers gently wrapping around her cold, trembling hand. He didn't look away. He didn't soften the blow with false hope. He owed her the absolute truth.
"She’s gone, Khloe," Harrison said, his voice cracking slightly for the first time. "The trauma was too severe. Dr. Vance tried everything, but… we lost her."
A suffocating silence filled the sterile hospital room, broken only by the steady beep of the monitor. Tears spilled over Khloe’s lower eyelids, cutting hot tracks down her pale cheeks. She didn't scream. She didn't thrash. She simply closed her eyes, letting out a hollow, agonizing sob that seemed to tear the remaining life right out of her chest.
Harrison stood up, leaning over the bed and wrapping his arms around her fragile frame, burying his face in her hair as she wept against his shoulder. He held her tight, anchoring her to the earth as the grief washed over them both like a tidal wave.
"I'm sorry," Harrison whispered fiercely against her temple, his jaw clenching as a dark, dangerous fire reignited in his eyes. "I'm so sorry, Khloe."
After a long, agonizing silence, Khloe pulled back slightly, looking up into her brother’s face. Her eyes, red and swollen, locked onto his with sudden, piercing clarity.
"Where is he?" she whispered.
"Richard?" Harrison asked quietly.
"And her. Where are they, Harry?"
Harrison straightened up, walking over to the bedside table where a glass of water sat. He handed it to her, waiting while she took a tiny, hesitant sip to wet her throat.
"Richard is currently being held at the Montgomery County detention facility," Harrison said, his tone flat, cold, and utterly devoid of mercy. "He signed a full confession and a complete surrender of all assets this morning. His law license is revoked, his accounts are seized, and he is facing a mandatory prison sentence for fraud and conspiracy."
Khloe stared at him, the shock momentarily overriding her grief. "And Vanessa?"
A chilling, humorless smile touched the corners of Harrison’s mouth.
"Vanessa Kensington is currently sitting in a federal holding cell while her father’s firm is dismantled piece by piece by the Department of Justice and my forensic accounting team," Harrison replied smoothly. "By the end of this week, the Kensington family won't have enough money left to buy a cup of coffee, let alone pay bail. They are completely, utterly ruined."
Khloe stared at her older brother. In that moment, she didn't see just her protector. She saw the Executioner.

"Good," Khloe whispered, her voice cold, steady, and resolute as she sank back into her pillows. "Make sure they remember my baby's name every single day of their miserable lives."
