Chapter 13 - The Apex Ultimatum

"An agreement," I repeated, my finger tightening slightly against the cold steel of the trigger. "You mean extortion. My mother was paying you protection money to keep your syndicate from exposing her corporate crimes."

Julian let out a dry, humorless chuckle, adjusting the collar of his coat. He didn't look like a common thug; he looked like a senior partner at a Wall Street investment firm who happened to moonlight as an executioner.

"Extortion is such an ugly, pedestrian word, Conrad," Julian corrected smoothly, pacing slowly across the Persian rug in the foyer. "Let us call it an insurance policy. Florence Pendelton wanted absolute control over this company twenty-two years ago. She needed a clean slate, a quiet adoption to bury a bloodline, and a few inconvenient people permanently removed from the ledger. My organization provided those services. In exchange, we required a steady, uninterrupted dividend from the empire she built."

"My mother is behind bars, and her accounts are frozen," I said coldly. "If you want your money, take it up with the federal bankruptcy court."

Julian stopped pacing. His smile vanished, replaced by an expression of chilling, absolute indifference.

"The federal court does not concern us, Mr. Pendelton. Nor do prison sentences. Assets can be seized, accounts can be frozen, but debts—debts remain eternal," Julian said softly, taking another step closer. "Your mother defaulted on a twenty-million-dollar quarterly obligation yesterday morning. That money was earmarked for clients who do not possess the patience of a judicial system. They want their capital, Conrad. And if they cannot have corporate funds, they will settle for collateral."

My blood ran cold. I thought of Vivienne sleeping upstairs. I thought of Gemma and Maeve down the hall.

"If you or anyone else so much as touches my family—" I began, my voice dropping into a lethal growl.

"Your family?" Julian interrupted, raising an eyebrow with mock surprise. "Conrad, you are a businessman. You understand leverage. You have forty-eight hours to liquidate a secondary subsidiary of Pendelton Enterprises, clear the twenty-million-dollar balance into an un-tradable cryptocurrency wallet of our choosing, and transfer the keys to my firm."

"And if I refuse?"

Julian pulled a small, sleek silver flash drive from his pocket and tossed it casually through the air. I caught it out of reflex with my left hand, keeping the gun trained on him with my right.

"If you refuse," Julian whispered, stepping backward toward the front door as the snow blew in through the slightly ajar entryway, "we won't just bury your wife alive this time, Conrad. We will dismantle everything you love—brick by brick, person by person—until there is nothing left of the Pendelton name but a footnote in a police blotter."

Before I could pull the trigger or lunge forward, Julian stepped out into the blinding snowstorm, pulling the heavy oak door shut behind him with a quiet, hollow click.

May you like

I stood alone in the bright foyer, the silver flash drive burning cold against my palm.
