Chapter 8 - The Web of Collusion

The revelation hung in the air like poison. Gemma stood frozen beside her mother’s bed, her hands covering her mouth as the full weight of her grandmother’s crimes settled over her.

"Grandma... is that true?" Gemma asked, her voice cracking with betrayal. "Did you really try to kill Mom?"

Florence didn't answer Gemma directly. Instead, she turned her cold, calculating gaze onto me, her chin held high with a defiant arrogance that was truly chilling.

"I built this company, Conrad," Florence spat out, her voice dripping with venom. "Your father was a weak, sentimental fool who was going to leave everything to an outsider charity. When we found out that my late husband's illegitimate brother had fathered a child—Vivienne—we had to clean up the mess. We adopted her legally to keep the assets inside the family control. But when she started asking questions about her biological roots two years ago, and when she threatened to rewrite the corporate charter to give half of Pendelton Enterprises to this beggar... she signed her own death warrant."

Mason buried his face in his hands, letting out a muffled groan. "Mom... you said it was just going to be a legal removal. You said she’d just be put to sleep and sent away! You told me nobody would get hurt!"

Brenda spun around, glaring at her husband with absolute fury. "Shut up, Mason! You coward! You knew about the plan from day one!"

I felt a roar building in my chest—a primal fury that eclipsed every ounce of business sense, every lesson in corporate diplomacy, every restraint I had ever learned. I lunged forward, grabbing Mason by the lapels of his designer jacket and slamming him against the hospital wall. The medical cart rattled violently, and a tray of instruments crashed to the floor.

"You knew?" I roared, my face inches from my brother’s terrified eyes. "You knew our wife—the mother of your niece—was going to be buried alive, and you kept your mouth shut?"

"Conrad! Stop!" Detective Miller shouted, pulling me back with the help of the second officer. "Step away from him! Let the law handle this!"

I shoved Mason away, panting heavily, adjusting my suit jacket with shaking hands. I turned my attention back to the detective.

"Officer, I want every single one of them placed under arrest right now," I commanded, pointing a trembling finger at Florence, Brenda, Mason, and Paige, who stood weeping quietly in the corner. "Charge them with attempted murder, corporate fraud, conspiracy, and kidnapping."

Detective Miller nodded firmly, signaling to the officers by the door. "You got it, Mr. Pendelton. Officers, place Florence Pendelton, Brenda Pendelton, and Mason Pendelton under arrest. Read them their rights."

As the heavy steel handcuffs clicked into place around my mother's wrists, Florence stared at me with unblinking hatred.

"You will regret this, Conrad," she whispered as they led her toward the door. "Without us, Pendelton Enterprises will crumble within a week."
