Chapter 8 - The Shadow at the Window

By Wednesday afternoon, the autumn wind had picked up, rattling the dry oak leaves against the windowpanes and sending swirling gusts of dust across the front yard.

Daddy had set up a small folding table in the living room so we could work on my massive 500-piece space jigsaw puzzle together. We had already finished the outer edges of the galaxy and were trying to figure out where a swirling purple nebula piece belonged.

"I think this one goes near the bright star," I said, holding up a dark, speckled piece.

"Let's see," Daddy squinted, adjusting his glasses. "Turn it just a little to the left... Ah, yes! Perfect fit, kiddo."

Suddenly, the sharp crunch of gravel echoed from the driveway outside.

Daddy froze. His hand hovered over the puzzle pieces for a split second before he slowly straightened up, his eyes darting toward the front window.

A car door slammed shut—not the familiar, muffled thud of our usual delivery drivers, but the sharp, angry metallic clunk of a crossover SUV door being thrown open with excessive force.

A shadow fell across the front porch.

My heart did a sudden, panicky flutter in my chest. I looked up at Daddy, my fingers gripping the edge of the puzzle table so hard my knuckles turned white.

"Is it her?" I whispered, my voice trembling.

Daddy didn't answer right away. He stood up from the couch, his face instantly hardening into a mask of cold, unyielding protection. He walked softly across the hardwood floor toward the front entryway, peering cautiously through the frosted glass of the sidelight window.

Through the glass, we could see her.

It was Karen. She stood on our welcome mat, dressed in her sharp business blazer, her face twisted in an ugly, frustrated scowl. She reached out and began pounding aggressively on the front door, her fist rattling the wood.

"Robert! Open this door right now!" her muffled voice screamed through the panels. "I know you're in there! My lawyer called me this morning saying you filed a permanent restraining order and froze my access to the joint checking account! You can't just lock me out of my own life!"

I shrank back against the couch cushions, pulling my knees up to my chest. Even though Daddy had promised me she couldn't get in, the sound of her voice instantly brought back the cold, scary feeling of the night she dumped the trash over my head.

Daddy didn't flinch. He didn't shout back. He simply reached into his pocket, pulled out his cell phone, and dialed three numbers without hesitation.

9-1-1.

"Edmond Police Department, what is your emergency?" a dispatcher's calm voice echoed through the speaker as Daddy hit speakerphone.

"Yes, my name is Robert Miller," Daddy said clearly, his voice carrying an absolute, razor-sharp authority. "I am reporting a trespasser at 414 Elm Street. There is a protection order and a temporary eviction notice currently in place against this individual, and she is currently attempting to force entry onto my property."

Outside, Karen must have heard him talking on the phone through the door, because her pounding stopped instantly.

"Robert, you son of a bitch!" she screamed, her voice cracking with hysteria. "Don't you dare call the cops on me! I just want to talk!"

"You have nothing to say to me, and you are violating a court-ordered no-contact injunction," Daddy shouted back through the solid wood door. "The police are already on their way. If you don't walk off this property right now, you will be arrested for criminal trespassing."

A tense, heavy silence hung over the porch for a long, agonizing ten seconds.

Then, we heard the sharp crunch of gravel again, followed by the roaring engine of her crossover SUV peeling out of the driveway, tires spitting loose stones across the asphalt as she sped away down the street.

Daddy lowered his phone, disconnecting the call after confirming the police dispatch was already updating the unit en route. He exhaled a long, slow breath, running a hand through his hair, before turning around and walking quickly back toward the living room.

When he saw me cowering on the couch with my knees pulled up to my chin, his expression melted from fierce protector to tender father in a fraction of a second.

He hurried over, dropping to his knees right in front of me and taking my small hands in his.

"Hey," he whispered softly, his thumbs gently rubbing the backs of my hands. "Look at me, Chloe. Look at my eyes."

I looked up, blinking back a stray tear.

"She is gone," Daddy said firmly, pressing a kiss to my knuckles. "She tried to test the boundaries, and she just earned herself a felony violation. The police are handling it, and she will never, ever get near this house again. You are completely safe."

I nodded slowly, the fluttering panic in my chest finally beginning to settle down. I leaned forward and wrapped my arms around his neck, burying my face in his shoulder.

"I know, Daddy," I whispered. "I know you won't let her hurt me."
