Chapter 9 - The Legal Shield

Within twenty minutes of the police report being filed, two Edmond police cruisers pulled up to our driveway.
An officer named Davis—a kind-looking man with graying temples and a calm demeanor—walked up to our front porch and knocked politely. Daddy opened the door, letting him into the foyer while I stayed safely on the couch finishing our space puzzle.
"Mr. Miller?" Officer Davis asked, holding a notepad. "We received your call regarding the active protection order violation."
"Yes, officer," Daddy said, gesturing to the paperwork neatly organized on the kitchen counter. "Here is a copy of the temporary emergency injunction and the no-contact order issued by Judge Harrison’s office yesterday afternoon. She was served digitally by my attorney at 8:00 AM this morning, which means she was fully aware she was legally barred from coming within five hundred feet of this residence."
Officer Davis flipped through the pages, nodding slowly. "Clear as day. We ran her license plate as our patrol units headed out this way; she didn't get five blocks before our guys pulled her over on Route 66."
Daddy’s eyebrows shot up. "You caught her?"
"We did," Officer Davis said with a faint, satisfied smile. "She gave our sergeant a hard time, claiming she was just 'trying to reason with her husband,' but ignorance of a court order isn't a legal defense. She's currently sitting in the back of a cruiser down at the precinct facing a charge of willful violation of a domestic protection order, plus criminal trespassing."
A wave of immense relief washed over Daddy’s face. He let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding and shook the officer's hand.
"Thank you, Officer. My daughter is an active pediatric cancer patient recovering from chemotherapy inside this home. The last thing she needs is erratic, aggressive individuals terrorizing our front porch."
Officer Davis’s professional expression softened instantly, his eyes shifting down the hallway toward where I sat quietly on the couch. He looked back at Daddy with deep, respectful sympathy.
"I understand completely, Mr. Miller. We've logged the incident report into the permanent file, and we're issuing an automatic dispatch flag for this address. If she or anyone associated with her comes within a block of this house again, units will be here in under two minutes with zero warnings issued."
After the officer left, Daddy walked back into the living room, a quiet, resolute strength radiating from him. He walked over to the puzzle table, picked up the final piece of the swirling purple nebula, and slotted it neatly into place with a satisfying click.
"Puzzle's finished," he announced, looking down at me with a warm, reassuring smile.
I looked down at the completed galaxy sparkling on the table—millions of colorful pieces locked together to form something beautiful and whole, despite all the rough edges.
"We finished it together," I said proudly.

"We sure did," Daddy agreed, sitting down beside me on the couch and pulling me close. "And from now on, everything we build in this house is going to stay safe, strong, and protected."
