Chapter 2 - The Missing Evidence

The hospital corridor instantly transformed from a sterile waiting area into a controlled tactical zone. The arrival of state troopers alongside federal military intelligence officers sent a visible shudder through the ranks of the Vance brothers. The arrogant laughter that had echoed moments earlier was replaced by a tense, uneasy murmuring.
Marcus Vance puffed out his chest, trying desperately to regain his bravado, though a flicker of genuine panic danced in his eyes.
"This is an abuse of power!" Marcus barked, taking a step toward Detective Ruiz. "You can't just detain us! We demand a lawyer! You're arresting respectable business owners over a domestic dispute!"
"Respectable business owners don't beat a pregnant woman into a miscarriage," Detective Ruiz retorted coldly, tapping a few keys on his tablet. "And as for abuse of power, Mr. Vance, your family just assaulted the wife of a three-star general currently serving as senior strategic advisor to the Department of Defense. This isn't a local domestic dispute anymore. This is a federal security matter."
The eight Vance brothers exchanged nervous glances. The youngest, Tyler, looked as though he might throw up, shifting his weight frantically from foot to foot.
I ignored their squabbling and turned my attention back to Detective Ruiz, stepping away from the crowd. "What did you find on the preliminary sweep, Detective?"
Ruiz lowered his voice, angling his tablet away from the Vances. "That's the problem, General. It's not clean. When my patrol units arrived at your residence to secure the scene, the local precinct had already logged a call. But the security footage... it's gone."
My eyes narrowed. "Gone? Explain."
"The exterior cameras at your house stopped recording at exactly 8:17 PM," Ruiz explained, his brow furrowing. "Not just a power outage, General. A targeted hard-drive wipe. Someone logged into your home network using administrative credentials and scrubbed the server clean. Furthermore, highway toll cameras caught a dark sedan with an unreadable, covered license plate passing your property twice right around the time of the assault."
A cold spike of adrenaline shot through my veins. This wasn't a random, drunken family brawl fueled purely by domestic malice. This was coordinated. Someone had planned the timing, ensured the cameras were disabled, and orchestrated the assault with surgical precision.
And then I remembered what Clara had whispered from her hospital bed just minutes before the monitors flatlined into panic:
“My father didn't come because of me... He came because he thought I had the file.”
"Marcus didn't just come to punish Clara for marrying outside their social circle," I muttered under my breath, the pieces of the puzzle beginning to click together with terrifying clarity. "He came to retrieve something. Something Clara took from his corporate archives."
"What file, General?" Ruiz asked urgently.
Before I could answer, the intensive care doors flew open again. Dr. Vance—no relation to Marcus—stepped out, wiping sweat from his forehead, looking exhausted and grim.
"General Cole," the doctor said, walking directly toward me. "Your wife’s vitals have stabilized temporarily, but she's waking up. She's asking for you. But you need to be careful—her psychological state is extremely fragile, and her body is under severe trauma."
I nodded once, pushing past the cluster of detained Vance brothers without sparing them a single glance. "Keep them locked down, Detective. Nobody leaves this floor."
As I stepped back into the sterile, quiet gloom of ICU Room 4, Clara was staring blankly at the pale green hospital ceiling. Her bruised face was a map of physical agony, but the look in her eyes—a hollow, haunted emptiness—hurt far worse than any physical wound could ever inflict.
She turned her head slowly on the pillow, her cracked lips parting as she whispered my name.
"Jonathan... they didn't find it, did they?"

I stepped to the bedside, gently taking her trembling hand in mine. "No, Clara. They didn't find anything. But we need to talk about what you were hiding. What is in that file?"
