Chapter 6 - The Tribunal Beneath the Concrete

The heavy, metallic hum of the idling Escalades sounded suddenly insignificant against the oppressive weight of the tactical operators surrounding the underground garage. Marcus Vance’s smug facade had completely shattered, replaced by a frantic, darting panic in his eyes as he realized his money, his local political connections, and his expensive lawyers meant absolutely nothing down here in the dark.

"You can't do this!" Marcus snarled, his voice cracking as he took a defensive step backward, colliding with his eldest son, David. "This is kidnapping! This is a gross abuse of military authority! We are American citizens, not enemy combatants!"

"You forfeited your rights the moment you targeted a federal witness and murdered an unborn child under the cover of a coordinated corporate conspiracy," I replied, my voice chillingly steady as I motioned to the lead tactical operator. "Secure them. Confiscate all communications devices, encrypted drives, and cryptographic keys. No one makes a call."

Within seconds, the black-clad operators moved in with ruthless efficiency. The Vance brothers attempted to put up a brief, pathetic resistance, shoving and shouting threats, but they were pinned against the cold concrete pillars before they could even draw breath. David was slammed hood-first onto the nearest SUV, while Brett was handcuffed with industrial plastic ties behind his back, howling curses into the damp air.

Marcus struggled fiercely as two operators gripped his arms, his expensive wool coat tearing against a protruding concrete bolt. "You're making a catastrophic mistake, Jonathan! The people behind me—the real stakeholders—they won't let you get away with this! They own the oversight committees in Washington!"

"Let them try to audit me," I murmured, stepping close enough for him to smell the cold fury radiating off my skin. "Because unlike you, Marcus, my paper trail leads straight to justice."

Detective Ruiz jogged down the garage ramp a moment later, breathless, holding a secure encrypted terminal in his hands. "General! You've got an incoming priority ping on the secure satellite channel. It's... it's originating from a direct congressional line in Washington, D.C. The Chairman of the Armed Services Committee is demanding an immediate verbal report on why a municipal grid in Iowa has been locked down by unauthorized military assets."

I turned away from Marcus, taking the terminal from Ruiz’s hands. I didn't hesitate. I swiped the accept button and raised the device to my ear.

"General Cole," a sharp, patrician voice barked through the encrypted speaker, dripping with faux-indignation. "What in God's name do you think you're pulling in Cedar Rapids? Release those civilians immediately and stand down your tactical units, or I will personally initiate articles for insubordination and court-martial you before the sun rises!"

A faint, victorious smirk flickered across Marcus’s face despite being pinned against a concrete pillar. He heard the voice; he recognized the power behind it.

I looked straight at Marcus, let out a slow, deliberate breath, and spoke directly into the mic.

"With all due respect, Senator Vance," I said, intentionally emphasizing the surname shared by the political heavyweight backing the syndicate, "you're talking to a commanding officer currently holding your primary financial benefactor in a basement crime scene. If you try to interfere with this investigation, my next call won't be to the committee—it will be to the federal grand jury with the unedited master ledger."

The line went dead silent.
