Chapter 3 - The Cold Awakening at St. Catherine’s

While our private jet soared thousands of feet above the Atlantic, cutting through the dark storm clouds toward European airspace, the atmosphere in Room 412 of St. Catherine’s Hospital was thick with the scent of antiseptic, expensive flowers, and rising panic.
The private maternity suite was designed to mimic a luxury hotel room, complete with custom mahogany woodwork, a king-sized recovery bed, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the twinkling lights of the city’s financial district. But right now, the luxury felt like a gilded cage.
Selina Cole lay propped up against a stack of goose-down pillows, her pale face slick with sweat, her blonde hair tangled around her shoulders. In the rolling acrylic bassinet beside her bed, a newborn infant slept peacefully, swaddled in a pale blue blanket embroidered with the initials F.V. Jr.
Yet neither the mother nor the baby was the center of attention in the room.
Flynn Vance stood by the window, his back turned to the bed, his cell phone pressed so hard against his ear that his knuckles were white. He had been pacing the length of the room for twenty minutes, his voice rising in frantic, ragged bursts that had caused a nurse to peek anxiously through the glass door twice before retreating in haste.
"What do you mean the accounts are locked?" Flynn roared into the phone, his voice echoing off the high ceiling. "I am the chief executive officer of Vance Global Medical! You cannot freeze my personal operating lines without a court order!"
"Mr. Vance, I’m telling you for the third time, the compliance department received an emergency directive signed by the majority voting trust and backed by an immediate federal injunction," a harried voice replied from the corporate legal department. "All executive credit lines, corporate expense accounts, and subsidiary holdings associated with your name have been flagged under Section 4 of the internal fraud statutes. You’re locked out of the system. We can't even authorize your hospital billing code anymore."
"That’s a mistake! That’s an illegal corporate coup!" Flynn shouted, his face turning a deep, mottled purple. "Put Arthur Vance on the line right now! Put my aunt Fiona on the phone!"
"Mr. Vance... Mr. Vance?"
The line went dead with a sharp, final click.
Flynn stared at the dark screen of his phone for three agonizing seconds before throwing it across the room with all his might. The expensive device smashed against the reinforced drywall just inches from the bassinet, shattering into a dozen plastic and glass fragments that scattered across the plush carpet.
Selina flinched violently at the sound, letting out a sharp cry of distress as she clutched her postpartum stitches. "Flynn! Have you lost your absolute mind? The baby is right here! Are you trying to give us both a heart attack?"
Flynn whipped around, his eyes wide and bloodshot, his chest heaving as though he had just survived a shipwreck. He stormed over to the side of the bed, grabbing the metal railing with both hands until the structure rattled.
"My accounts are frozen, Selina," he whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of sheer terror and murderous rage. "All of them. Not just the corporate slush funds—my personal accounts, the investment portfolio, the trust advances. Everything is locked. Aunt Fiona and Arthur are executing a complete corporate takeover as we speak, and Elena... Elena knew. She knew everything."
Selina’s face went slack, the color draining from her cheeks until she looked almost translucent against the white pillows. "What do you mean she knew? How could she know? We used encrypted messaging apps. We routed every payment through three different shell companies in the Caymans. Nobody outside our internal circle had access to those server logs!"
"She didn't need the server logs," Flynn snarled, leaning down so close his face was inches from hers. "Her father left her forty-one percent of the voting shares through an irrevocable trust that doesn't require board ratification to execute an emergency audit. She had forensic accountants crawling through our financials for three weeks while we were sitting in our penthouse laughing at how stupid she was—playing the quiet, obedient charity wife while she was tightening the noose around our necks!"
"We have to call our lawyers," Selina stammered, her hands gripping the hospital sheet so tightly her fingernails dug into the fabric. "We have the property in the harbor. We have the cash reserves we transferred last month—"
"The harbor penthouse was purchased under the Aegis Holding Group," Flynn interrupted, his voice dropping into a harsh, mocking whisper. "Which Arthur Vance just proved in a five-minute emergency filing is a wholly owned subsidiary of Vance Global. The deed has already been reverted to the corporate asset pool. We own nothing, Selina. Not the apartment, not the car, not even the clothes in your closet."
The harsh reality of their ruin hung in the sterile air between them like a physical weight. For six years, they had played a high-stakes game of corporate chess, believing they were the grandmasters, moving pawns and sacrificing workers without a second thought. They had treated Elena as a ghost—a quiet, harmless shadow in the background of their brilliant success.
Now, the ghost had materialized, and she wasn't just haunting them; she was burning their entire world to ash.
A soft knock tapped against the heavy oak door of the room. Neither Flynn nor Selina answered, too paralyzed by their own terror to move.
The door pushed open slowly, and two men in dark charcoal suits stepped into the room. They weren't doctors, and they weren't hospital administrators. Their broad shoulders, short haircuts, and heavy leather briefcases identified them instantly as federal marshals.
The taller of the two men pulled a folded document from his breast pocket, stepping past the shattered remains of Flynn’s phone on the floor.
"Mr. Flynn Vance?" the marshal asked, his voice calm, steady, and entirely devoid of emotion.
Flynn backed away until his legs hit the edge of the mattress, his hands trembling as he stared at the federal badge glinting under the harsh fluorescent lights of the maternity ward.
"Yes," Flynn whispered, the word barely audible over the soft hum of the neonatal monitor.

"You are being served with a federal warrant for corporate wire fraud, embezzlement, and industrial espionage under Docket Number 44-B-8890," the marshal said, stepping forward and clicking a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his belt. "Please place your hands behind your back. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
