Chapter 9 - The Stranger at the Gates

The security feed on my desk monitor flickered to life, bringing the image from the front entrance into sharp, high-definition focus.

The man standing on the sidewalk had pulled down his wool scarf, revealing a face I hadn't seen in a decade except in old newspaper clippings and sealed litigation files. It was Richard Vance—my father’s estranged younger half-brother, who had been legally exiled from the family trust twenty-five years ago following an embezzlement scandal that nearly bankrupted the company's infancy.

Fiona walked over to my desk, her eyes widening as she stared at the monitor screen. "Richard? How is that possible? The federal restraining orders from your father's estate probate should have kept him out of the state for another decade."

"Restraining orders only work against people who respect the law, Aunt Fiona," I said, my voice dropping into a cold, focused register. "And Richard Vance has never cared about the law."

The intercom on my desk buzzed sharply. Arthur’s voice came through, sounding tense and urgent.

"Elena, are you seeing this? Security just detained Richard Vance at the lobby turnstiles. He’s demanding an immediate meeting with you. He claims he has a legal claim to twenty percent of the voting trust under an unexecuted codicil signed by your father three days before he passed away."

Fiona’s face went rigid. "A codicil? That’s impossible! Your father’s legal mental capacity was evaluated by three independent physicians during his final week. No such document exists!"

"Richard claims it does," I said, walking toward the private elevator bank at the back of the boardroom. "And he’s brought a camera crew from the financial news network with him to make sure the world knows about it."

"Elena, don't go down there," Fiona warned, grabbing my arm. "This is a trap. He’s trying to manufacture a public scandal to force a corporate settlement while the company is still vulnerable from Flynn's arrest."

"Let him try," I said, gently pulling my arm away. "Flynn tried to destroy this company from the inside out with lies and fake spreadsheets. If Richard wants to bring his war out into the open lights of the lobby, I’ll be waiting for him."

The private elevator dropped forty-five floors in less than thirty seconds, its smooth descent mirroring the sudden, sharp drop in my own adrenaline. When the brushed-steel doors slid open, the bright, cavernous lobby of Vance Global was bathed in the harsh, glaring lights of television cameras and reporter microphones.

Richard Vance stood in the center of the polished marble floor, flanked by two aggressive-looking lawyers in expensive suits. He had aged significantly since I last saw him—his hair was completely white, his face lined with bitter ambition, but his sharp, predatory eyes were unmistakable.

As I stepped out of the private elevator, walking across the marble with the quiet, unyielding posture that had unnerved Flynn at Gate 4, the reporters turned their cameras toward me in a synchronized wave of flashing lights and shouted questions.

"Mrs. Vance! Is it true that the Vance family trust is facing a multi-million-dollar contest over executive ownership?"

"Mrs. Vance, does Richard Vance hold legal title to the original foundational patents?"

I didn't stop walking until I was standing two feet away from Richard, towering slightly above him in my heels, my expression completely serene.

Richard flashed a cold, venomous smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Hello, niece. It seems you've been very busy cleaning house while forgetting who actually owns the keys to the kingdom."
