Chapter 6 - The Digital Vault

The shredded strips of legal parchment drifted downward like gray snow, settling over the toes of Beatrice’s polished designer shoes. For a long, breathless second, the only sound in the dusty attic study was the heavy, rhythmic breathing of Detective Miller standing by the doorway and the faint hum of the industrial shredder idling beside the desk. Kenneth looked like he was about to faint, his knees buckling slightly as he gripped the edge of the mahogany table for support. But Beatrice didn't flinch. Her eyes narrowed into cold, calculating slits as she stared at her daughter, refusing to yield an inch of her composure.

"Paper can be shredded, Hannah," Beatrice said, her voice dripping with venomous calm. "Signatures can be forged, and digital files can be corrupted or wiped clean by morning. You think a dramatic resurrection gives you legal ownership of an estate worth thirty million dollars? The corporate filings were processed by our attorneys twenty-four hours before you were even put into the ground. By sunrise, our offshore accounts will receive the full liquidity transfer, and you and your little boys will be legally declared non-existent."

"You underestimate modern encryption, Mother," Hannah replied, her voice steady and freezing cold. She turned her gaze from Beatrice to Detective Miller. "Marcus, look at the secondary wall panel behind the bookshelf. There’s a biometric hardware wallet locked inside the secondary vault. That’s where every single authentic corporate ledger, digital signature, and encrypted backup of the family trust is mirrored in real-time."

Miller didn't hesitate. He stepped across the room, wrenching open the wooden panel behind the old mahogany bookcase to reveal a heavy steel biometric safe embedded deep into the drywall. He looked back at Kenneth, who was now trembling so violently his teeth were chattering.

"Open it, Kenneth," Miller ordered, resting his hand on his holstered firearm. "Or I will have the department tech crew blow the hinges off with a plasma torch right now."

Kenneth swallowed hard, sweat pouring down his temples in thick beads. With shaking hands, he stepped forward, pressed his right thumb against the biometric scanner, and punched a six-digit code into the keypad. The heavy steel door clicked open with a satisfying mechanical hiss, exposing a sleek, high-security data drive resting on a velvet cushion.

Miller reached inside, picked up the drive, and slipped it safely into his jacket pocket. "Secured. That's checkmate, Beatrice."
