Chapter 8 - The Hospital Reunion

The sterile smell of antiseptic and the low, rhythmic hum of heart monitors greeted Hannah as she pushed open the heavy double doors of the pediatric intensive care unit at Naperville General Hospital. The harsh fluorescent lights reflected off the polished linoleum floors, casting a pale, clinical glow over the hallway. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she walked slowly down the corridor, her bare feet still clad in the hospital-issued slippers they had given her after pulling her out of the grave.
She stopped outside Room 412. Through the large glass observation window, she could see two small hospital beds pushed side by side, illuminated by the gentle amber glow of bedside lamps. Mason and Wyatt lay sleeping beneath crisp white sheets, small oxygen tubes resting gently under their noses, their pale faces finally regaining a faint hint of natural warmth and color.
Hannah’s hand trembled as she pushed the door open, stepping silently into the quiet room. She walked over to Mason’s bed first, gently brushing a stray lock of brown hair away from his forehead. His skin felt warm—not the icy, terrifying chill of the coffin, but the warm, vibrant heat of a living child. A soft, shuddering sigh escaped her lips, and a fresh tear slipped down her cheek, landing softly on the white blanket.
"Mommy?"
Hannah gasped softly, looking down to see Wyatt’s big, sleepy eyes blinking open, looking up at her with a mixture of confusion and lingering fear.
"Wyatt, baby, I'm here. I'm right here," Hannah choked out, rushing to pull a chair between the two beds and taking both of their small hands into hers, pressing them tightly against her face.
"My head hurts, Mommy," Wyatt whispered, his voice weak and raspy. "Where were we? I remember eating the birthday cake, and then everything went black. It was so dark... and so cold."

"You're safe now, sweethearts," Hannah murmured, kissing their knuckles over and over again, her voice breaking with overwhelming relief. "You're safe, and nobody is ever going to hurt you again. Mommy is here. I promise you, I will never, ever let anyone take you away from me."
As the twin boys drifted back into a deep, peaceful sleep, holding tightly to their mother's hands, Hannah stared out the window toward the brightening eastern horizon. The dark, stormy night was finally giving way to the first golden rays of dawn.
