Chapter 6 - The Buckhead Breach

The rain had softened into a persistent, misty drizzle by the time my truck rolled past the iron security gates of the luxury high-rise in Buckhead. Arthur Vance’s penthouse suite occupied the entire top floor of the glass-and-steel tower, overlooking a sprawling skyline that shimmered with the neon glow of midnight advertisements. Evelyn sat in the passenger seat, her laptop balanced on her knees, rapidly drafting emergency affidavits while I navigated the winding parking deck. We didn't have a formal warrant, and we didn't have the Forsyth County Sheriff behind us, but we had something far more dangerous: a desperate father and an attorney with nothing left to lose.

"The underground service elevator connects directly to the penthouse maintenance shaft," Evelyn whispered, pointing at a small blueprint she had pulled up from the building's public zoning records. "If we catch them off guard before security makes their midnight rounds, we can slip right up to the service landing without tripping the front lobby alarms."

I cut the engine, the sudden silence of the underground garage pressing heavily against my ears. My hands were steady on the steering wheel, though my pulse raced with a cold, rhythmic fury. Every mile driven from the lake cabin had only deepened my resolve. They had stolen Susan's sanctuary, forged her signature, and trapped my daughter in a web of corporate greed. It was time to pull the threads apart.

We exited the truck and slipped through the heavy metal service door, which clicked softly shut behind us. The elevator ride to the fourteenth floor felt agonizingly slow, the digital numbers ticking upward in amber increments. When the doors finally slid open with a muted chime, we stepped out onto a plush, soundproofed hallway that smelled of expensive cedar and faint cologne.

At the far end of the corridor, double mahogany doors stood slightly ajar. A thin strip of warm light spilled onto the carpet, accompanied by the muffled sound of raised voices.

"I don't care what your father wants, Hannah!" Arthur Vance’s sharp, abrasive voice cut through the quiet air. "Your signature is legally binding on that power of attorney, whether you claim you read it or not! If you try to pull out of the Apex assignment now, I’ll ensure Shawn goes down for three counts of felony wire fraud and grand larceny before the sun comes up tomorrow!"

I didn't wait for Evelyn. I strode down the hallway, my boots making no sound on the thick carpeting, and threw the mahogany doors wide open.
