Chapter 8 - The Missing Leverage

Arthur’s smug assurance hung in the air like a challenge, daring us to cross him. He clearly believed he held all the legal cards, insulated by corporate shell companies and clever bureaucratic loopholes. But he was forgetting one crucial detail: corporate greed always leaves a paper trail, and desperate men make sloppy mistakes.

Evelyn didn't flinch. She simply crossed her arms, a thin, knowing smile touching the corners of her lips as she looked at Arthur across the marble coffee table.

"You’re right about one thing, Arthur," Evelyn said, her voice dripping with professional disdain. "A quitclaim deed recorded in a registry holds weight—*unless* the notary public who stamped it has already been flagged for interstate fraud."

Arthur’s hand froze halfway to his mouth, the glass of scotch hovering inches from his lips. The smug color drained from his face in a single heartbeat.

"What... what are you talking about?" Arthur stammered, his eyes darting frantically toward the door.

"Marcus Vance," Evelyn recited clearly, pulling a certified state investigator's report from her briefcase. "The mobile notary out of Atlanta who certified Susan Miller’s signature on the trust transfer six months ago. As of 3:00 a.m. this morning, the Georgia Secretary of State’s office officially revoked his license and issued a statewide arrest warrant for multiple counts of fraudulent document fabrication and identity theft. Every single paper he stamped in the last year is currently being thrown out by the superior court."

Shawn let out a terrified gasp, dropping heavily onto the edge of the leather sofa and clutching his head in his hands. "No... no, Marcus swore to us it was clean! He said it was standard procedure!"

"Standard procedure for white-collar criminals," I added, stepping forward until I was standing just inches away from Arthur. I looked down into his panicked, darting eyes. "You thought you could steal my late wife's cabin to cover your gambling debts and corporate failures. You thought you could use my daughter as a pawn in your little shell game. But your house of cards just collapsed, Arthur."

Arthur tried to maintain his composure, setting his glass down with a sharp clink. "Even if the notary is compromised, the corporate assignment of Apex Logistics holds! The debt is real, and the assets are legally tied to our holding accounts!"

"Except for one tiny problem," Evelyn interrupted, sliding a final sheet of paper across the table. "Apex Holdings was incorporated using falsified tax identification numbers and stolen social security credentials belonging to shell entities that haven't operated in five years. The moment the state auditor reviews this file at 8:00 a.m., your entire corporate structure will be frozen under federal racketeering statutes."
