Chapter 6 - The Bitter Root

The acrid scent of bitter almonds and decay filled the cramped space of the bouncing ambulance, sharp enough to make my eyes water. Staring into the microscopic cavity of Julian’s wedding band, the horrifying truth clicked into place with absolute clarity. This wasn’t just a family heirloom; it was a wearable poison reservoir, designed to slowly drip into the skin of whoever wore it, keeping them in a permanent state of compliance, fogged and tethered to the estate.
"Clara..." Julian groaned, his head lolling to the side as another wave of tremors wracked his emaciated frame. "Get it off... please... take it off my finger..."
I gripped the heavy gold band, but it wouldn't budge. It was swollen against his knuckle, sealed tight by years of accumulated sweat, skin, and whatever slow-release chemical coating lined the interior.
"Hold on, I've got you," I muttered, my hands shaking as I searched the paramedic supply kit on the wall for a pair of surgical shears or wire cutters.
Up front, the ambulance groaned under another violent impact. The black SUV from the roadblock had caught up to us, ramming our passenger side again with enough force to shatter the remaining glass of the partition window. Marcus screamed as glass shards rained over the dashboard.
"They're trying to pit-maneuver us!" Vance bellowed over the roar of the engine and the screeching metal. "Clara, brace yourself! I'm taking the old logging road shortcut toward the state highway, but if they box us in here, we're done for!"
I jammed myself between the supply cabinets and the rolling gurney, wrapping one arm around Julian’s chest and gripping a bolted metal bracket with the other. The world outside turned into a chaotic blur of dark pines, gray mist, and the flashing headlights of the pursuing sheriff’s cruiser.
Suddenly, the ambulance swerved hard to the left, tires kicking up mud and gravel as we veered off the paved highway onto a narrow, unpaved logging track choked with thick brush and low-hanging branches. The vehicle bounced violently, throwing supplies out of the open cabinets. A box of sterile gauze pads and a bottle of antiseptic hit the floor, rolling around like marbles.
Amidst the chaos, my eyes caught on a heavy, stainless-steel surgical clamp lying near the foot of the gurney.
I lunged for it, snatched it up, and crawled back to Julian’s side. Without a word of warning, I wedged the tip of the clamp beneath the band of his wedding ring, using the fulcrum of his knuckle to pry the thick gold metal apart.
Julian let out a sharp cry of pain, his eyes snapping open in pure agony as the gold ring finally snapped with a metallic shriek, tearing away from his swollen skin and clattering onto the floorboards.
Instantly, the color in Julian’s face shifted. The dull, glassy haze that had clouded his eyes ever since we woke up began to clear, replaced by a sudden, sharp shock of raw awareness. He sucked in a massive, ragged breath of air, sitting up halfway on the stretcher with a strength he hadn't possessed a minute ago.
"My head..." Julian whispered, clutching his left hand where a raw, red circle was burned into his skin. "Clara... what happened? Where are we?"
"You're safe," I panted, throwing the shattered ring into a biohazard bin. "Your family tried to drug you. They’ve been doing it for generations."

Before Julian could process my words, the ambulance gave a terrifying lurch that threw both of us against the wall. A deafening crunch echoed from the rear as the back doors were suddenly wrenched open by an outside force, letting in a howling rush of cold morning wind and the grim face of Sheriff Thomas standing on the rear bumper while the vehicles sped side-by-side through the forest.
