Chapter 9 - Fire and Foundation

The second enforcer roared with rage, lunging past his fallen partner to grab me by the collar of my cardigan, but Vance intervened, tackling the man around the waist and sending both of them crashing into the prickly underbrush in a tangle of limbs and shouts.

Arthur didn't wait. He pulled a sleek, heavy revolver from his coat pocket, leveling the barrel directly at Julian’s chest with chilling, absolute finality.

"It's a shame," Arthur murmured, his finger tightening on the trigger as the cold morning light glinted off the steel barrel. "You could have lived like kings if you had just learned to keep your mouths shut and drink the water."

"Drop the gun, Arthur!"

A sharp, authoritative voice echoed from behind the tree line, cutting through the damp forest air like a gunshot.

From the upper ridge of the logging trail, three state police cruisers burst through the fog, their emergency strobe lights painting the clearing in blinding flashes of red and blue. Armed troopers poured out from behind the doors, their assault rifles raised and locked directly onto Arthur.

Arthur froze, his finger still resting on the trigger, his eyes darting frantically toward the state troopers and then back at us. He lowered the revolver an inch, his mind calculating the impossible odds.

"State Police! Drop your weapon on the ground immediately!" the lead trooper shouted, his voice echoing off the canyon walls.

Arthur slowly lowered the gun to the dirt, letting it slide from his fingers into the wet pine needles. He raised his hands, a bitter, defeated laugh escaping his throat as two troopers rushed forward, slamming him against the hood of the black SUV and snapping heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.

"You got us out of the woods, nephew," Arthur spat as they dragged him past Julian toward a cruiser. "Literally. But do you really think the old woman is going to let you walk away from the estate? You're still bound by the marriage vows, Julian. You drank the water. The bloodline claims its own, even behind prison bars."

I grabbed Julian’s hand, squeezing his fingers tightly as we watched them push Arthur into the back of the police cruiser. The heavy doors slammed shut with a definitive, metallic thud that felt like the closing of a nightmare.

Vance stood up from the brush, wiping mud off his uniform with a tired sigh, while Marcus radioed dispatch to confirm the arrests.

"It’s over," Vance said, walking over to us and offering a reassuring nod. "The state bureau has a warrant signed by a federal judge to raid the Vance estate right now. SWAT is already moving in on the main gates."

Julian looked down at his hand, where the raw circle from the poison ring was slowly fading against his skin. He breathed out a long, shuddering sigh of relief, wrapping his arm around my shoulders and pulling me close.

"Not quite yet, Vance," Julian said quietly, his eyes fixed on the distant silhouette of the sprawling manor rising above the mist through the trees. "There's still one person left in that house."
