Chapter 7 - The Needle and the Monitor

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I looked around the room in frantic desperation, searching for anything I could use as a weapon. The heavy metal IV pole stood beside the bed, but it was bolted to the rolling base, too cumbersome to swing effectively in tight quarters.
The stranger took another deliberate step closer, his eyes locked on Chloe with chilling indifference.
"Don't you dare touch her," I snarled, lunging forward with a ferocity that caught him completely off guard.
Instead of trying to punch or wrestle him, I threw my weight against the rolling medical tray table covered in sterile syringes, alcohol wipes, and plastic basins, shoving the entire metal structure directly into his shins.
The cart crashed against his legs with a loud, metallic clatter, spilling medical supplies across the linoleum floor. The man stumbled backward, his boot slipping on a plastic bottle of saline solution, and the heavy syringe flew from his grip, shattering against the base of the monitor.
"You foolish old woman," the man growled, regaining his balance with frightening speed. His face twisted into a mask of pure rage as he lunged forward, his massive, gloved hand shooting out to grab me by the throat.
The force of his grip slammed me backward against the wall, cutting off my air supply instantly. Spots danced in my vision as I clawed desperately at his wrist, but his grip was like a vise forged from steel.
"End of the line, Clara," he rasped, his face inches from mine, his breath smelling of bitter almonds and stale tobacco.
On the hospital bed, Chloe stirred. The sudden commotion—the clattering cart, the muffled struggle—broke through the heavy chemical fog of her sedation. Her eyelids fluttered open, and she let out a weak, terrified cry.
"Grandma...?" she whimpered, her tiny hand reaching out from beneath the blanket.
Hearing her voice unlocked a primal reservoir of strength I didn't know I possessed. With a guttural cry, I brought my heel down with all my might directly onto the top of the man's foot, grinding my shoe into his instep while driving my elbow backward into his ribs.
He grunted sharply, his grip loosening for a fraction of a second. It was all the opening I needed. I twisted my body away, gasping for air as I stumbled against the bedside table, my hand sweeping across the surface until my fingers closed around heavy, hard plastic.
It was a full, unopened bottle of heavy liquid antiseptic.

Without thinking, I spun around and brought the heavy plastic bottle down with a sickening crack directly across the side of the man's head.
