Chapter 8 - Chaos in the Corridor

The heavy thud echoed off the walls of Room 412. The man staggered sideways, his eyes rolling back for a split second before he caught himself against the edge of the medical cart, blood trickling from a nasty gash near his temple.
He stared at me with pure venom, lifting his hand to wipe the blood from his cheek. "You're going to regret that," he hissed, lunging forward again.
Before he could reach us, the emergency call button I had managed to swipe with my elbow during the scuffle finally triggered the overhead alarm.
WEE-WOO. WEE-WOO.
A piercing electronic klaxon began blaring down the St. Joseph’s corridor, accompanied by the flashing red security lights mounted above every door in the pediatric wing. Shouts echoed from the hallway as heavy footsteps stampeded toward our room—not the slow, drugged shuffle of incapacitated guards, but the heavy, tactical boots of the hospital's armed private security detail backed by local patrol officers.
"Security! Freeze! Put your hands on your head!" a voice roared from the doorway.
The man in the trench coat froze, glancing back toward the door where three armed security guards and two police officers had weapons drawn, lasers painting his chest in a lattice of red dots.
For a second, I thought he was going to draw a concealed weapon from his coat. But his eyes flicked back to me, then to Chloe, who was crying softly in the bed, before he made a calculated, chilling choice.
With blinding speed, he spun around, diving headfirst through the large glass window of the hospital room that looked out onto an exterior fire escape stairwell.
CRASH!
Safety glass exploded inward in a shower of glittering shards as he smashed through the pane, tumbling out into the cold night air just as the officers swarmed into the room.
"Don't shoot! He's heading for the fire escape!" I screamed, coughing as I clutched my bruised throat, pointing frantically toward the shattered window.
Two officers rushed past me, leaping through the broken frame onto the metal landing outside, while the third officer secured the door and immediately called for backup and a perimeter lockdown.

Within seconds, the room was a blur of medical staff rushing in to check on Chloe, who was sobbing uncontrollably into her pillow. I sank down onto the edge of the mattress, pulling her small, trembling body into my arms, letting my tears fall freely into her hair while the room buzzed with shouting medics, flashing lights, and the distant wail of incoming sirens.
