Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

Panic, swift and blinding, tore through SwiftFreight Tower before noon.
In less than three hours, the meticulously constructed empire Gavin Pierce had spent a decade building began to unravel like a cheap sweater caught on a nail. By ten-thirty, Crestview Partners had formally issued a public statement freezing the 3.2-billion-dollar investment pending an emergency federal compliance audit. By eleven o’clock, three major commercial logistics clients—frightened by rumors of impending asset seizures and federal indictments—had sent formal notices suspending their supply chain contracts.
Inside his private corner office, Gavin was screaming so loudly his voice cracked, hurling a heavy crystal decanter against the floor-to-ceiling glass wall. The expensive Scotch pooled across the Italian marble like fresh blood.
"Find Mason!" Gavin roared at his cowering secretary, who stood frozen near the doorway with a stack of urgent legal briefs. "Get him on the phone right now! Where is my CFO?!"
"Mr. Mason’s phone has been switched off, sir," the secretary stammered, her hands shaking. "Federal agents... federal agents just seized the finance department’s primary servers downstairs. They served search warrants for Mason, Bridget, and... and three of our regional vice presidents."
Charlotte paced frantically near the window, her designer shoes clicking sharply against the floor. Her professional composure was entirely gone, replaced by wild, animalistic panic. "We need to do damage control, Gavin! Call our PR firm, call our lobbyists, do something! If the media runs with this, my career is finished, your reputation is destroyed, and SwiftFreight will be liquidated before the weekend!"
Gavin spun around, his face purple with rage, pointing a shaking finger at her. "Your career? Your career?! This started because of your stupid sports car! Because you swore up and down that Sabrina scratched your stupid Porsche in the parking lot, and you nagged me into confronting her, hitting her, and pushing her out the door!"
"Don't you dare put this on me!" Charlotte shrieked, stepping right up to his chest, her eyes flashing with venom. "You’re the genius CEO who didn't even bother to check security cameras! You’re the one who thought you were untouchable! You handed her all the ammunition she needed on a silver platter because you couldn't control your own ego!"
Before Gavin could raise his hand to strike her—just as he had struck Sabrina two nights before—the heavy oak door of his office burst open.
Three men in dark windbreakers with yellow FBI lettering across the back walked into the room.
"Gavin Pierce?" the lead agent asked calmly, pulling a laminated badge from his jacket pocket. "And Charlotte Gable?"
Gavin stepped back, his chest heaving as reality finally crashed down around him. "This is a mistake. I am the CEO of SwiftFreight. I demand to speak to my attorneys—"
"You can speak to your attorneys as long as you like down at the federal holding facility," the agent interrupted, stepping forward and clicking a pair of cold steel handcuffs onto Gavin’s wrists. "You’re being placed under arrest for corporate wire fraud, forgery, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit financial extortion."
Charlotte let out a strangled cry as a second agent gently but firmly pulled her arms behind her back, snapping the second pair of cuffs into place.
As they were marched past the glass walls of the executive suite, down the hallway, and into the private elevators past rows of staring, terrified employees, Gavin caught a brief glimpse of his reflection in the polished brass elevator doors. He looked older, smaller, and utterly ruined.

Sabrina Miller wasn't anywhere to be seen. She didn't need to witness the arrest. She was already sitting in a sunlit corner booth at a quiet café three blocks away, sipping chamomile tea and reviewing the preliminary transfer documents that would soon transfer controlling equity of SwiftFreight into her own name.
