Chapter 4 - Dawn at the Estate

The sun was just beginning to streak the gray Chicago sky with pale shades of amber and bruised purple when Alexander’s black armored Mercedes turned through the massive wrought-iron gates of the Pellagrini estate in Lake Forest.

I sat in the plush leather backseat with Lily resting her head softly against my lap, fast asleep once more after the dizzying whirlwind of the past four hours.

The estate was breathtaking—and terrifying.

A long, winding driveway flanked by towering ancient oaks led up to a sprawling stone mansion that looked less like a home and more like a European fortress. Security cameras blinked red dots from the manicured tree branches, and discreetly parked black SUVs sat near the perimeter walls. This wasn't just a house; it was a compound. A gilded cage guarded by men with guns.

The car glided smoothly to a halt in front of the grand double doors of the entryway.

Alexander turned around from the front passenger seat, his dark eyes resting softly on Lily before shifting up to meet mine.

“We're here,” he said quietly, so as not to wake her.

I swallowed hard, looking out the tinted window at the towering stone pillars. “It’s huge.”

“It’s safe,” Alexander corrected gently. “And from this moment on, it’s yours as much as mine.”

The driver—a silent, broad-shouldered man named Victor whom Alexander trusted implicitly—stepped out and opened the car door for us. The morning air was crisp and smelled faintly of pine and the nearby lake.

As I carefully scooped Lily up into my arms, adjusting her blanket around her shoulders, Alexander stepped out and offered me his arm. I hesitated for a split second before slipping my hand into the crook of his elbow. His muscles were rigid, warm, and steady.

The heavy oak doors swung open before we even reached the steps.

Waiting in the grand, marble-floored foyer was an older woman with silver hair pulled back into a neat bun, wearing a crisp black dress with a white apron. Her posture was immaculate, her expression a mix of strict professionalism and profound curiosity.

“Mr. Pellagrini,” the woman said, bowing her head slightly. “Welcome home. We didn't expect you back until—” She stopped abruptly as her eyes landed on me, holding a sleeping child in my arms, standing arm-in-arm with the most feared man in the Midwest.

“Mrs. Gable,” Alexander said smoothly, stepping into the foyer and guiding me forward. “Meet my wife, Megan. And our daughter, Lily.”

Mrs. Gable’s eyes widened just a fraction—the only sign of shock allowed in the Pellagrini household. Then, her expression softened instantly as she looked at Lily’s sleeping face.

“Your wife?” Mrs. Gable echoed softly, a warm, genuine smile breaking across her lined face. She stepped forward, curtsying slightly. “Welcome to the estate, Mrs. Pellagrini. I’ve prepared the master wing on the east side. And a nursery has been set up adjacent to it.”

I blinked, stunned. “A nursery? But we only just—”

“I anticipated your needs, Megan,” Alexander interrupted smoothly, his gaze meeting mine with a quiet intensity. “Nothing is left to chance in this house.”

Mrs. Gable gently took Lily from my arms, her touch practiced and soothing. “Come along, little one. Let’s get you into a real bed.”

As Mrs. Gable carried Lily gracefully up the sweeping double staircase, I stood alone in the cavernous marble foyer with Alexander. The heavy silence of the mansion pressed in around us, filled with centuries of history, secrets, and blood.

“Well,” I whispered, wrapping my arms around myself. “I suppose this is where the performance begins.”

Alexander stepped closer, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an unyielding force that made my breath catch.

“It’s not a performance, Megan,” he said quietly, his voice dropping into a low, serious register that vibrated through the empty hall. “From the moment you walked through those gates, you are a Pellagrini. And nobody touches what belongs to a Pellagrini.”

Before I could answer, a sharp, urgent chime echoed from the security console near the study doors.

Victor, who had just entered behind us, rushed over to the console and tapped the screen. His face went instantly pale.

“Boss,” Victor said, his voice tight with alarm. “We have an issue at the south gate. Someone just breached the outer perimeter.”

Alexander’s entire demeanor shifted in a fraction of a second. The gentle husband vanished, replaced by the ruthless syndicate boss.

“Who?” Alexander demanded coldly.

Victor tapped another key, bringing up an exterior security camera feed onto the main monitor.

My heart stopped dead in my chest.

May you like

Displayed on the screen, stumbling across the manicured lawn toward the front steps, bleeding from the temple and foaming at the mouth with blind, rabid fury, was Ryan.
