Chapter 5 - Blood on the Lawn

The sight of Ryan stumbling across the pristine, dew-soaked lawn of the Pellagrini estate felt entirely surreal—like watching a nightmare bleed directly into daylight.
He was missing his jacket, his shirt was torn at the collar, and a dark crimson trail of dried blood smeared down the side of his face from where Alexander’s enforcers had left him unconscious in the apartment hallway hours earlier. He looked unhinged, wild-eyed, and driven by a toxic mix of alcohol, humiliation, and pure, unadulterated rage.
“How the hell did he find us?” I gasped, my hands flying up to cover my mouth as I stared at the security monitor in the grand foyer. “We drove straight here in an armored car!”
“He didn't follow us,” Alexander said coldly, his eyes fixed on the screen with a dark, predatory calm. He didn't look surprised; he looked irritated, like an apex predator whose nap had been interrupted by a stray dog. “He traced the license plate of the taxi he took after we left your apartment, or he bought information from a corrupt local cop. Desperate men do desperate things.”
On the monitor, Ryan reached the base of the grand stone steps. He grabbed the decorative wrought-iron handrail, shaking it violently, and began screaming obscenities toward the second-floor windows.
“Megan! I know you're in there! Open up, you thieving bitch!” Ryan’s voice echoed faintly through the thick glass doors of the foyer. “You think you can hide behind some rich prick?! That’s my kid! I’ll burn this whole damn place to the ground!”
I felt a cold shiver run down my spine. Lily was upstairs sleeping peacefully, and the thought of Ryan—volatile, violent, and completely out of his mind—getting anywhere near her made my blood boil with a fierce, protective terror.
“Alexander, don't let him near Lily,” I whispered, my fingers digging into the fabric of his sleeve.
“He won't even make it past the fountain,” Alexander replied smoothly.
He didn't raise his voice, but his hand moved casually to his lapel, tapping a small hidden comms button.
“Victor,” Alexander said quietly. “Take care of the trespasser. Quietly, and thoroughly.”
“Boss,” Victor nodded once, his face impassive, and turned toward the side exit.
“Wait!” I blurted out, stepping in front of Alexander. “Don't kill him! God, Alexander, I know what kind of world you live in, but he’s Lily’s father. I don't want blood on my doorstep—not like this.”
Alexander stopped. He looked down at me, his dark, stormy eyes softening just a fraction at the panic written across my face. He reached out, his large, warm hand gently resting on my shoulder.
“I wasn't going to kill him, Megan,” Alexander said, his voice reassuringly calm. “Men like Ryan aren't worth the bullets. But he needs to learn a lesson he will never, ever forget. He needs to understand that the boundary he just crossed is permanent.”
On the security monitor, the heavy oak front doors remained shut, but the scene outside shifted dramatically.
Before Victor could even step outside, three of Alexander’s elite security guards materialized from the shadows of the stone pillars. They moved with terrifying, synchronized precision. Before Ryan could swing his fists, one guard swept his legs out from under him while the other two pinned him face-down into the wet grass, driving a knee sharply into the small of his back.
Ryan shrieked, thrashing like a hooked fish, but he was completely helpless against trained professionals.
“Get off me! Do you know who I am?! I’ll sue every single one of you!” Ryan roared into the dirt.
Victor stepped out onto the porch, looking down at Ryan with utter contempt. He didn't say a word. He simply pulled a pair of heavy zip-ties from his tactical belt, bound Ryan’s wrists behind his back with practiced efficiency, and hauled him up to his feet by his collar.
“Mr. Pellagrini extends his warmest greetings,” Victor said in a low, chilling monotone. “And invites you to leave Lake Forest immediately. Permanently.”
“Let me talk to Megan! Megan!” Ryan bellowed, straining against the guards as they dragged him away from the steps toward the waiting black van parked near the perimeter wall.
The security monitor flicked back to a peaceful view of the empty lawn as the van doors slammed shut and it peeled out of the estate gates.
I let out a long, shuddering breath I felt like I’d been holding for a century. The tension in my shoulders eased slightly, though the lingering taste of fear remained on my tongue.
“He’s gone?” I asked softly.
“He’s gone,” Alexander confirmed, his hand still resting reassuringly on my shoulder. “And he won't be back. By noon today, my legal team will ensure he has a one-way ticket out of Illinois, a restraining order backed by federal jurisdiction, and enough legal threats hanging over his head to keep him running for the rest of his miserable life.”
I looked up at Alexander, the morning light catching the sharp angles of his face. For the first time since I met him in the grocery store aisle, the terrifying mafia boss aura melted away just enough for me to see the man underneath—the man who had quietly stepped into my nightmare and erased it with a single word.
“Thank you,” I whispered, my voice thick with emotion.
Alexander’s dark eyes searched mine for a long moment, holding my gaze with an intensity that made my heart skip a beat.
“You don't need to thank me, Megan,” he said quietly, his thumb gently brushing against my collarbone. “You are a Pellagrini now. Protecting you and Lily is not a favor. It’s my duty.”
Before I could answer, a soft patter of tiny footsteps echoed from the top of the grand marble staircase.
We both turned.
Lily stood at the top of the landing, rubbing her eyes, wearing her pink pajamas and looking down at us with a sleepy, confused expression.
“Mommy?” she called out, her small voice echoing in the vast foyer. “Where are we?”
I looked at Alexander, then back up at my daughter.
May you like
“We’re home, baby,” I whispered.
And for the first time in four years, I actually believed it.
