Chapter 10 - The Unwritten Chapter

Three weeks later, the morning sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of my new corner office on the forty-second floor of Vale Tower, casting long, elegant geometric patterns across a polished walnut desk. On the wall hung a framed archival print of a rare 1920s New York architectural sketch—my first official curation project for the corporate acquisitions division.

My phone buzzed on the desk. I picked it up, seeing a text message from Chloe: “Just moved into my dorm room, Mara! The scholarship coordinator said my housing deposit was fully paid by the Vale Foundation trust. I still can’t believe this is real life!”

I smiled, typing back a quick, reassuring reply before locking the screen.

Life had changed in ways I never could have imagined when I walked into Vale Manor wearing an ivory silk scarf to hide my face from the world. The legal trials for Celeste and her associates were moving swiftly through the federal courts, supported by an airtight mountain of digital evidence and corporate audits that ensured she would never again be in a position to manipulate or destroy anyone else's life.

A soft knock sounded at my office door, and before I could even answer, it swung open.

Julian stood in the doorway, wearing a charcoal tailored suit with his tie neatly knotted, holding two paper cups from our favorite downtown coffee shop. He looked across the spacious office, taking in the art books stacked neatly on the shelves and the city view spreading out behind my desk.

“Inspection time,” Julian announced with a dry, teasing grin, walking over and placing one of the cups down beside my laptop. “How is my best acquisitions director holding up on her third week?”

“Surviving, Mr. Vale,” I replied, taking a sip of the hot coffee and looking up at him with a mock-serious expression. “Though I’m thinking about filing a formal complaint with HR regarding the excessive charm of the CEO.”

Julian chuckled, leaning against the edge of my desk and reaching out to brush a stray lock of hair behind my ear. His touch was warm, deliberate, and entirely natural.

“HR has already reviewed the complaint and determined that the CEO’s behavior is entirely justified given the circumstances,” he murmured, his voice softening. “In fact, the CEO would like to formally request your presence downstairs this evening for dinner—completely off corporate property, and without a single silk scarf in sight.”

I felt a warm, happy flutter in my chest, realizing that the ghost of the past was finally laid to rest, and the future was entirely ours to write.

“Accepted,” I whispered, smiling up at him. “Lead the way.”
