Chapter 5 - The Corporate Trap and the Hidden Files

The grand dining room was no longer a celebration; it was a holding cell. The heavy mahogany double doors remained sealed under the watchful eyes of four private security operatives stationed by the exits. The forty wealthiest guests in New York sat frozen in their seats, whispering behind cupped hands, too terrified to leave and too fascinated by the unfolding social massacre to look away.

Celeste was sobbing openly now, her expensive makeup running in dark streaks down her cheeks, ruining the flawless facade she had spent a lifetime constructing. She sat crumpled in a velvet armchair near the fireplace, muttering frantic denials to anyone who would listen, though no one dared approach her.

Julian stood near the head of the table, his arms crossed over his chest, looking down at a sleek, matte-black tablet handed to him by his head of security. The glowing screen illuminated the harsh, unforgiving angles of his face.

“Bring her up to the private study,” Julian instructed without looking up, his voice cutting through the tense silence of the room. He flicked his gaze toward me. “Mara. With me.”

I hesitated, clutching the silver tray to my chest out of sheer instinct before realizing I didn't need to hold it anymore. I placed the tray gently onto the nearest sideboard, smoothed down the front of my black maid’s uniform, and lifted my chin. I had survived eleven years of living in the shadow of Celeste’s malice; I wasn't going to cower now.

“I’m right behind you, Mr. Vale,” I said steadily.

Julian’s eyes softened for a fraction of a second at my tone before he turned and strode toward the private elevator hidden behind a wood-paneled wall in the corner of the dining room. I followed him inside, the mirrored doors sliding shut and cutting off the muffled cries of the guests and the frantic weeping of his former fiancée.

The private elevator ascended smoothly to the top floor of the mansion, opening directly into Julian’s expansive, book-lined study. It smelled of aged leather, burning cedar, and expensive scotch. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a breathtaking, panoramic view of the Manhattan skyline glittering beneath the stormy night sky.

Julian walked straight to his massive mahogany desk, placed the tablet down, and tapped the screen twice. A hidden wall-mounted television screen flickered to life, displaying a complex web of financial documents, corporate registry files, and high-resolution security archives.

“Do you know what this is, Mara?” Julian asked, gesturing toward the screen.

I stepped closer, squinting at the dense rows of data. “It looks like corporate audit files... and real estate holdings?”

“More than that,” Julian said, his jaw tightening. “Over the past five years, Celeste Ashford has been systematically positioning herself to merge her family’s struggling boutique PR firm with Vale Enterprises’ philanthropic trust. To do that, she needed an unblemished public profile—and she needed to ensure that anyone who knew her past history of blackmail, sabotage, and fraud was permanently silenced or discredited.”

He tapped the screen again, bringing up an old, digitized police report and a series of scanned agency documents from eleven years ago. My breath caught in my throat as I recognized my own name at the top of the page.

“When she framed you for stealing those designer bags from the agency dressing room, it wasn't just a petty act of teenage jealousy,” Julian explained, turning his steel-gray eyes toward me. “She knew you were auditioning for the same international campaign contract that she desperately needed to secure her first major sponsorship. She planted the items in your locker, bribed the floor manager to corroborate her story, and threatened to ruin your sister’s future if you fought back legally.”

“How... how do you have all of this?” I whispered, staring at the screen in disbelief. The documents laid bare the exact truth I had carried like an open wound for over a decade—proof that I hadn't imagined her cruelty, that I hadn't been weak, but that I had simply been crushed by a machine built on lies.

“When Celeste came into my life three years ago, I had my private intelligence division run a standard background check on her,” Julian said quietly, walking around the desk to stand just inches away from me. “Their report showed a clean record. But tonight, when I saw that silver locket and heard your name, I had my lead investigator run a deep-dive secondary audit on her personal finances and her old agency records using our corporate override keys. It took my cyber team less than twenty minutes to crack her personal cloud storage archive.”

He reached out, his hand gently brushing against my arm—a warm, grounding touch that sent a sudden, unexpected jolt through my nervous system.

“I am so sorry, Mara,” Julian said, his voice thick with genuine remorse. “If I had known the truth eleven years ago, I would have torn her world apart before she ever laid a finger on yours.”

I looked up into his eyes, feeling the protective armor I had worn for a decade begin to crack under the weight of his words. But before I could answer, the secure intercom on his desk buzzed sharply, breaking the quiet intimacy of the room.

Julian pressed the speaker button with a frown. “Report.”

May you like

“Mr. Vale,” the head of security’s voice crackled through the speaker, tight with sudden panic. “You need to look at the ground-floor security feed immediately. Miss Ashford’s personal assistant just tried to sneak out through the service loading dock carrying a heavy steel lockbox marked with your family crest.”

Julian’s eyes flashed with dark, dangerous lightning. He turned back to the screen, tapping a series of commands. “Lock down the perimeter gates. Nobody leaves this property with my family’s vault contents.”
