Chapter 10 - The Secret in the Safe

While the gunfire echoed across the distant airport tarmac, the private study upstairs remained dead silent, bathed in the gray afternoon light filtering through the tall arched windows. The heavy oak door was locked tight, ensuring absolute privacy.
With Aleandro gone, a stray gust of wind from the balcony door—left slightly ajar during his hasty departure—caught a stack of old ledgers on the corner of the mahogany desk, fluttering the aged yellow pages. A small, hidden drawer beneath the bottom shelf of the bookcase, triggered by a mechanical pressure switch Aleandro had activated in his rush, clicked open with a soft, metallic snap.
Inside the hidden compartment sat a single, dust-covered leather journal bound with a faded red ribbon. Embossed on the cover in gold leaf that had long since begun to flake were the initials V.M.—Don Vincenzo Moretti, Aleandro’s late father.
Curiosity overriding caution, a young estate archivist named Julian, who had been sent in to secure the office after Aleandro's sudden departure, stepped closer. He picked up the heavy journal, blowing a layer of dust off the cover, and opened it to the middle pages.
The handwriting was jagged and hurried, scrawled in black fountain pen ink dated twenty-three years ago—the exact week Isabella Moretti was supposedly sent away to Zurich.
Julian’s eyes scanned the frantic entries, his breath catching in his throat as he read words that rewrote the entire history of the Moretti family:
*October 14:* Isabella refuses to give up the child. She knows what I did to her accountant. She knows the boy isn't a Moretti by blood, but she loves him all the same. She thinks she can hide in Europe. She's wrong. I can't let a bastard child contaminate the syndicate lineage. I ordered Salvatore's father to intercept her carriage in Zurich before she reached the clinic.
Julian flipped the page, his hands trembling violently.

*October 19:* The assignment was botched. Salvatore’s father couldn't bring himself to finish the job on a newborn. He hid the infant with a trusted nurse in Queens under a false name—Elena Rossi. Isabella died of grief a year later, believing her child was gone. Aleandro suspects nothing. He thinks his sister died in exile. If he ever finds out the truth—if he ever realizes that the girl scrubbing his floors and her daughter carry the true bloodline of the rival syndicate he slaughtered twenty years ago—the entire empire will tear itself apart from the inside out.
Julian dropped the journal onto the desk as if it were burning hot coal. He stared at the open pages in absolute horror, the deafening realization crashing over him like a tidal wave: Elena Rossi wasn't just Aleandro’s long-lost niece. She was the daughter of the sworn enemy Aleandro’s father had spent his entire life trying to erase—and the mafia boss had just wired half a million dollars and dispatched his best enforcers to protect her.
