Chapter 8 - The Ambush on the Tarmac

The private aviation hangar at Long Island MacArthur Airport was vast, drafty, and dominated by the sleek silhouette of a twin-engine medical transport helicopter idling on the tarmac. Its rotor blades cut through the crisp morning air with a steady, deafening thrum, kicking up loose gravel and sending Elena’s dark hair whipping across her face. Salvatore walked slightly ahead, his hand resting casually inside his heavy wool coat, his eyes scanning the perimeter fences and fuel trucks with the relentless vigilance of a combat veteran.

"Keep close, Elena," Salvatore shouted over the roar of the turbine engines. "We board in sixty seconds."

Elena clutched Maya tighter against her hip, shielding the little girl's ears from the deafening noise. They were just twenty feet from the open sliding door of the helicopter when Salvatore suddenly froze, throwing his left arm out to block Elena’s path.

"Get down!" Salvatore roared, drawing his Beretta from its holster in a fluid, lightning-fast motion.

Before Elena could even register the command, a deafening crack split the air—the unmistakable sound of a high-powered sniper rifle. A chunk of concrete exploded from the tarmac just inches from Salvatore’s boots, sending sharp grey shrapnel flying across the ground.

"Ambush! Sector four perimeter breach!" Salvatore yelled into his wrist comm, pivoting and shoving Elena and Maya behind the heavy steel landing gear of the medical chopper. "Get inside the cabin now! Move, move, move!"

Pandemonium erupted across the tarmac. Two of Salvatore’s tactical guards, positioned near the hangar doors, immediately returned fire with submachine guns, their muzzle flashes snapping brightly in the gray morning light. Sirens wailed in the distance as the automated security gates slammed shut, locking down the entire perimeter.

"Mommy, I'm scared!" Maya wailed, burying her face in Elena’s shoulder as the terrifying rat-tat-tat of gunfire echoed off the metal walls of the hangar.

"I've got you, baby, I've got you," Elena sobbed, shielding Maya with her entire body as she crawled frantically up the metal steps and into the cabin of the helicopter.

A medical nurse inside the aircraft grabbed Elena by the arm, hauling her and the toddler onto the pressurized floor away from the open doorway. "Stay down! Keep your head below the window line!"

Outside, Salvatore fired three rapid shots toward the distant perimeter fence where a black unmarked SUV had just crashed through the chain-link barrier. "It's the Russian syndicate," Salvatore muttered into his comm, a dark, murderous fury in his eyes. "They tracked the medical transport filing. They think the boss is on board!"

Two more shots ricocheted off the fuselage of the helicopter, pinging loudly against the aluminum hull. Salvatore emptied his magazine, reloading with lightning speed, and barked orders into his radio. "Cut the engines! Prep for emergency takeoff! If these bastards think they can touch a Moretti transport on my watch, they've got another thing coming!"

Inside the cabin, Elena held Maya tight, her heart hammering against her ribs like a sledgehammer. She had wanted to escape the mafia, she had wanted a normal life for her daughter, but sitting in the belly of a bullet-riddled helicopter while men killed each other outside, she realized a terrifying truth: you can run from your bloodline, but the bloodline always brings the war straight to your door.
