Chapter 5 - The Chase Through the Meatpacking District

The heavy ceramic sugar dispenser shattered against Julian’s shoulder, sending white crystals exploding across the linoleum like a miniature snowstorm.

Julian stumbled back, cursing sharply, his aristocratic composure cracking entirely.

"Get her!" Julian roared, wiping sugar from his tailored lapel.

Clara didn't wait to see what happened next. She vaulted over the end of the counter, scrambling past the pie display case and bursting through the swinging kitchen doors just as Sal Marino was coming out with a tray of fresh mugs.

"Hey! What's—" Sal started, but Clara grabbed his arm, shoving him hard toward the walk-in freezer.

"Run, Sal! They're going to kill us!" she screamed.

Clara bolted past the fryers, ducked through the greasy back exit, and shoved open the heavy metal door that led out into the alleyway behind West 14th Street.

The cold New York rain had picked up again, turning into a steady, freezing drizzle that lashed across her face. The alley was a narrow, claustrophobic canyon of rusted fire escapes, overflowing dumpsters, and black puddles reflecting the dull neon glow of a closed butcher shop.

Clara sprinted down the concrete, her sneakers splashing through oily water.

Behind her, the heavy metal door slammed open with a metallic crash.

"There she goes! Cut her off at the corner!" a voice shouted.

Clara’s lungs burned with every breath. The adrenaline was a white-hot current rushing through her veins, drowning out the fear, driving her forward. She turned hard down a narrow corridor between two brick warehouses, aiming for the open avenues of the Meatpacking District where crowds and traffic might offer a chance at survival.

She burst out onto Washington Street, dodging a startled delivery driver pushing a hand truck loaded with boxes of fish.

"Hey! Watch it!" the driver yelled.

Clara didn't look back. She darted between two idling box trucks, her eyes scanning the street for a cab, a cop car, anything.

Suddenly, a sleek black SUV pulled out from a side street, its tires throwing up a thick sheet of dirty water as it cut off her path. The passenger door swung open, and Julian Vance’s enforcer—the taller one with the scarred jaw—stepped out, blocking the sidewalk.

Clara stopped dead in her tracks, her chest heaving, her legs trembling with exhaustion. She looked left, then right. Trapped. The brick wall of the warehouse rose ten feet behind her.

The scar-faced man walked toward her slowly, a grim smile playing across his lips, his hands reaching inside his coat.

"End of the line, sweetheart," he muttered, closing the distance between them.

Clara’s hand slipped into her coat pocket, her fingers closing tightly around the cold, metallic shape of the USB drive. She wasn't going to hand it over. If she was going down, she was going to make sure the evidence went with her into the asphalt.

She braced herself, preparing to hurl the drive down a street storm drain, when the air above them suddenly shattered.

CRACK-CRACK-CRACK.

Three deafening gunshots echoed down the quiet street, punching clean holes through the hood of the black SUV.

The scar-faced man froze, whipping around in shock.

From the shadows of an overhead loading dock ten yards away, a heavy black Lincoln Navigator slid to a violent halt. The rear door flew open before the car had even fully stopped.

A tall man in a charcoal suit stepped out into the rain, holding a heavy Sig Sauer pistol aimed squarely at Julian’s enforcer.

Dante Vancini’s face was a mask of cold, unforgiving rage.

"Step away from her," Dante’s voice boomed over the hum of the rain, echoing off the brick walls with the terrifying finality of a death sentence.
